PhotoShop CS2
Dell Computer
Windows XP Professional
1.00 GB Ram

Hello, after installation of PhotoShop CS2 I have developed a problem with fax communications, which are routed through my computer, accessed with a fax console and normally viewed with "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer".
The faxes are now opened in "Adobe ImageReady CS2" and I receive a warning stating that Adobe ImageReady CS2 cannot read or write this file. Please use PhotoShop to open files of this type. (error# 30501).

I would like to keep the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" as my default fax viewer, as it is quick and simple. If there is not a way around that, then I will accept opening them in PhotoShop. The problem is that I don’t have a clue as how to get it to open in PhotoShop instead of ImageReady.

BTW, I did speak with an Adobe tech and without knowing what type of file the faxes are then they cannot help me resolve this issue. Right click a fax and go to "properties" and the only info it gives is file size, duration and speed.

Thanks in advance if anyone could possibly help me with this issue. Joe

Are they tiffs?

Right click on one of the files, Select Open With, browse for Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and check the Always Use… box. That oughta do it I think.

Unfortunatly the options are slim in this particular application. "Open With" is not available in this area. Right click yeilds: View, Delete, Save As, Mail To, Print, Properties. Seems odd that its not applicable for fax files. Thanks for the response. Joe

You need to save the file to your harrdrive first.

Have you tried to correct the file associations through the folder options view in either Windows Explorer or the Control Panel?

Joseph,
If you can’t set the association from the file, do it the other way: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types

Scroll down to .tif and .tiff and see what they’re set to. If PS, highlight the extension and change them to the MS FAX viewer…

You may need to reboot; I don’t know if the switch takes effect immediately or not.

Art, You Da Man!!! With proper instruction even the most daunting of tasks seem simple. That was it. I am most gratefull.

As a yearling on a PC, (15 on a Mac and wish I never switched) and being new to PhotoShop, I find myself on a very steep hill. With luck I will keep my footing, but the climb will be long and slow. Thanks again to you for the fix and all others for reponding. Happy Holidays. Joe

As a Postscript to this happy ending, note that if a right click doesn’t show "Open With" in the context menu, Shift + right click normally will!

Since John’s entire message was a Postscript, does that make it an EPS?

John, thanks for the tip, but since jumping the fence to PC, nothing seems normal to me. Shift + right click on this system will not show "open with" for some reason. Thanks anyway. Joe
