I have 3 desktop PC’s connected through a NetGear Router. The network is wired to the 3 desktop PC’s and the router has a wireless port for my notebook PC. About a month ago I changed the router to the the current model to give me wireless access for my notebook. This problem began after I changed the router although I don’t understand how changing the router could cause the problem I describe here – everything else on my network works fine.

The issue: When I have an image file open in PhotoShop 8 or 9 on ANY of my 3 desktop machines and I try to do a "Save As" to ANOTHER network machine I get the Adobe PhotoShop message "Could not save as "X:\Data\…\2460_054.jpg" because the file is already in use or was left open." The file I am trying to do the "Save As" is only open or in use on the machine that I have it opened on. When I try to do a "Save As" and I get the error message, I can open the folder on the network machine/drive that I am trying to save on and the file shows as ~psE1.tmp or something similar.

I am able to do a "Save As" to another machine (network drive) when I using Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Publisher and other software – I am just have trouble doing a "Save As" with Photoshop.

Everything was working fine until recently. Can you please help me? Hope you have a Merry Christmas!

It is really not recommended to save over a network. You should always save locally and copy the file to the server.

Thanks for your reply! Although it may not be recommended doing a Save As to a network drive has always worked perfectly fine in the past with absolutely no problems, I am trying to figure out why it all of the sudden stopped working.

I guess my second question is why isn’t it recommended. Thanks for your help!!

Bill,

my second question is why isn’t it recommended.<<

1. There is inherently more likelyhood of file corruption when working across a network than when working locally and so:

2. When you copy a file across a network, the network driver and O/S performs certain ‘checks and balances’ to ensure that what arrives is what was sent. When you save directly to a network drive, those checks are by-passed.

3. Image files tend to be large. The larger the file the more chance there is of file corruption.

4. Transferring massive amounts of data across a network can bring the network to its knees.

All the above (possibly with the exception of the last one) are applicable to a small peer-to-peer network but even more so on a Server – Client model, where often there are small bugs and incompatibilities in the network software that makes all of the above more likely.

Consequently Adobe only support saving to/opening from a network drive when using Version Cue which in reality does a local save followed by a copy as a background operation.

You mention installing a new router recently, you may also have changed something in the network configuration somewhere.

I have the same issue here.
It only occures when saving as jpg. Saving the image as TIF or PSD works fine.
"Saving for WEB" (and then as JPG) works fine, too. Photoshop makes a file ~ps25.tmp on the network drive. If I rename this file as *.jpg I can view it.
PS can’t rename the temp file.

Hi!

I have the same problem (in french version) after this :

We first replace the hard disk of the file server, and remade the users id for recognition on the new server.

After that, we add a Photoshop version CS2, and reinstall the two versions, so we are two users now.
We never had these problems before, we just save .jpg files about ±300 ko each…but now, it’s impossible to save directly by SAVE AS, on the network (same message as you).
It seems like something happen in december or january… WinXP updates ?? Win2000 ?? (server)

The only way we find is to use the Save for web… but it is longer a lot, cause we just open a .jpg, make little correction, and want to save it….
If you found a solution, I would be happy to know it.

P.S. Excuse my english, I do my best…
Thank you.

Hi Josee;

Thanks for your message. I have not found a solution to the Save As problem yet. It is interesting that you replaced your hard drive and the n the problem seemed to start. In November of 2006 I also replaced my hard drive with a larger one and that is when my problem started too.

Very interesting.

Thanks again – have a great day!

I also replaced my hard drive with a larger one

That drive would not happen to be over 1 Tb in size would it?

There used to be a bug in Windows that prevented PS from saving to drives that were that big.

Our file server hard disk has 120 Go…(in french Go, english Gb) There is a usb backup of 150 G – but it is not related to this problem. The file server is connected (mapped) with a letter.

I’m afraid there is something forcing me to evaluate to use Version Cue, altough I think it is not appropriate. We’re just working on jpeg (resizing), coming from server, and returning to…

(Au fait, merci pour l’info sur le forum francophone, parcontre, il n’y a pas grand chose sur cette question.)

Pour ce qui est des permissions, dans mon cas, par exemple, je suis administrateur, alors il ne devrait pas y avoir ce problème.

Hoping the clue !

Thanks everybody.

ANOTHER THING…

Adobe Acrobat is doing weird things too. When I finished working on a document that I have created on the network, I do File, Save.
THen It refuse to… and make a kind of temp file, named something like aaa04056, on the network, at the same place.

I do more and more think that this problem is an ADOBE PROBLEM… A problem which can be in association to WinXP.

A virus ? Or what. I did bought the adobe Creative suite 2, from the government reselling.

…. to follow
