ok you know how you place a picture ontop of an existing layer — try to superimpose the image — but the character is not quite the same — eg, the background is brighter, or darker or more grainy etc or dito the foreground…? is there any simple way to make them look like both images were supposed to be there?

I sit there tweaking small things like shadows, higlights, mid tones, and the like trying to ge them to look "real" but may times they dont.

Any simple solutions for this?

best, M/

Nope. Just hard work. That’s why Graphic Designers get the big bucks.

The secret of cooking a good meal is not just in the way you combine the ingredients – it starts with choosing the right combination of ingredients in the first place.

Wherever possible shoot your picture with a specific background (or at least style of background) in mind.

Take care that the lighting of both do not contradict one another. In this picture we shot the young man against a black backdrop in the studio. We took care to rim light him and made sure the kickers caught the side of his head and the top of his hand. then we chose a suitably low key shot of the inside of a snooker hall and arranged the background image so that the table light really looked as though it was illuminating the man from behind.

Always blur your background image. It would be out of focus if it had really been shot that way. Quite often is helps to add grain to the shot to help make the BG/FG look as though they were shot at the same time.

Use a Hue/Sat adjustment layer clipped to the background layer to alter the colour balance to match that of the foreground.
..

You can see more shots which have had new backgrounds dropped in on my web site <http://www.beautyphoto.co.uk> All but the two army lads were shot in the studio against either a plain white, Grey or Black paper background.

I’m off for a mince pie now.

Have a nice Christmas.

Chris.
