I’m trying to make DVD covers for a standard DVD case and I can’t print to the full 8.5" x 11" paper. It always leaves an uprinted area at the top and bottom.

I’m sure it’s some setup thing that forces a slight margin at the top and bottom of the paper but I can’t figure it out. Is it Photoshop or the printer?

What am I missing?

You didn’t say what printer.

Some printers print edge to edge if set do do so: most won’t.

And for the printers that can print borderless, some (Epson, for example) enlarge the image slightly beyond the border. This has the advantage of making up for slop in paper handling, but it also means that the image is not exactly the same scale that was intended.

Bottom line: it’s not a problem with Photoshop. It’s a printer issue.

This topic seems to hit upon a problem that I’m having that I’m not convinced is the printer. The original question by Andy Townsend left a bit for interpretation; so, please let me restate the problem as I am having it.

I am running Photoshop CS2 on a Windows XP professional platform. My machine is an high-end HP workstation (wx9300 two dual core processors) with 4GB RAM. My printer is a Canon iPF5000 that uses a photoshop plug-in GARO print driver dialog.

I usually print from the Print With Preview dialog but to cut to the chase I will describe what happens when you open the Page Setup menu option.

When the Page Setup window opens I see the virtual image of a page with a dotted line border (non-marching ants). I can select paper size and orientation. I can view, but not alter, the margins which are greyed out in the lower right of the window.

My problem occurs with larger format paper; specifically, 13×19, the so called ANSI Super B.

If the virtual page in the Page Setup window shows an 8.5×11 in Portrait the dotted outline is at the edges of the page and the greyed out margins read uniformly for Left, Right, Top, and Bottom 0.115 inch.

When I change the paper type to ANSI Super B 13×19 and change the orientation to Landscape the dotted line suddenly changes in the right margin and is not at the edge of the virtual image of the 13×19. The Left, Top, and Bottom margins read 0.115 inch; the Right margin reads 0.968 inch.

When I move from Page Setup to Print With Preview, there is now a virtual image of the print. The Preview has a black slightly embossed border. The image is not included in the right "virtual 0.968 inches" of the preview. It is simply blank. Not white, like a border; just blank.

My habit is to print 12×18 inch images on 13×19 paper; so, I’m not trying to go borderless or print an image that, native, is larger that the paper. Regardless, when I hit "Print," I get a warning dialog that says that the image is larger that the printable area and some "clipping" will occur. When I print anyway, the margins of my print are asymmetrical with the right border being ~1 inch wider that the others. Unfortunately the missing inch is not blank border but is the right ~1 inch of the image.

In an effort to fix this problem, I have hacked away at every setting I can find both in the Photoshop dialog options and the GARO print driver plug-in. I have even created "custom sized media" that I made 13×19.97 inches. The clipping still occurs.

If I go back to the Page Setup window, I can reset the dotted borders to the edge of the virtual page by switching around paper sizes and orientations. However, when I go to various larger format paper the attenuated right border dotted line occurs.

Any clues where the setting might be?

Many thanks, Andrew Donelson

Well, quick look at specs for your printer says it supports borderless on roll media only. As far as a bigger gripper margin on Gripper edge of 19" (ie what the printer hangs onto to pull sheet though printer) larger sheet sizes usually require a larger grip.
ie if you’re holding a piece of paper you cannot write on the part your fingers are covering, and the larger the paper, the more of it you’ll want to hang onto or the drag of weight from the rest of the sheet could rip the paper.
OR, if specs of printer are right, it claims to only support up to 17" sheet fed, so you might simply be out of printable area as designed by diver for sheet options.

Thanks for the reply, Heather.

I’m sheet feeding the 13×19 photo paper with the 13 inch edge; it’s true the printer limitation is 17 inch wide.

The gripper edge is not the issue either. As the image prints, the Right (clipped) margin is printed last.

Yesterday, I was doing a bit more experimenting and found the clipping did not occur if I configured the Page Setup to feed from the cassette rather than manual. I’m not using the roller function.

Still seems like an irritating quirk
