editing previous text

I’ve selected the text layer, and when I click the T in toolbar and then try to highlight text I get a new text dialogue box instead of being able to highlight and select the existing text.

How do I select text in a layer to edit it?

Thanks, Klaas. I’ve discovered that the problem is that the text layers are changed when I open the .psd file, which was created in Photoshop Elements. Please see my more recent post.
