Making Files Open in Photoshop

Hello,

I am unable to open images and open PhotoshopCS2 by clicking on an image. (jpg. tiff. ect…) I have tried to change the default opening settings for these types of files by doing the “open with” command (right clicking mouse) but when I browse to choose my file to “open with,” Photoshop is not an option. Since Photoshop was not an option I went into the program folder and selected Adobe PhotoshopCS2 which was there. I selected Photoshop and it then when back to the current existing viewer, Widows Picture and Fax Viewer. Photoshop is installed and works normally other than this issue.

After the “open with” attempt failed, I tried to change the opening with properties of individual file types. I right clicked on a JPG and changed the "Open with" properties of JPG files as I did above and it still didn’t select Photoshop.

I then uninstalled all the CS2 programs and reinstalled deleting all my preferences in hopes that I could load the default settings, twice. After reinstallation, I was again not allowed to use the open with setting in Photoshop and my preferences still appeared when I opened any of the adobe products.

Usually when I have installed Photoshop it asks what files I would like to associate Photoshop with opening. I didn’t ask me that in either two of my reinstallations.

Running Window XP Pro.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Adam:

There should have been no need to uninstall Photoshop. Also, simply using the "Open With" right-click option won’t change the default program used to open the files.

In Windows Explorer: Tools > Folder Options, File Types tab. Scroll down to JPG in the list, click on Change, the select Photoshop CS2 from the Programs list. OK.

But are you sure you want to open all your images open in Photoshop every time? It’s not the quickest way to open images, if you just want to view them, and are not planning on editing each one.

If you click on the "Advanced" button in the tab Larry mentioned, you can define different actions with different associations. eg Preview, Open with, Edit with, etc.

Another way to do this is to edit the file associations using the folder options panel in the control panel or in Windows Explorer. Jim

Larry and John,

Thanks for the tips but the problem still persists after trying your suggestions. Your right I don’t want to open and preview these in photoshop every time just sometimes, that is why I was doing the "open with" command. The "open with" just doesn’t allow me to select Photoshop for some reason even when I browse and go find it in the Programs files. I am thinking I accidently errased a preference setting because I logged into this same computer as another person and tried the "open with" command and the photoshop icon was there and let me select it.

If you have any other suggestions let me know. If not, thanks again for your help.

A registry hack to the appropriate OpenWithList option may solve your problem, but those may be uncharted waters, and you’d want to proceed with caution.
