photos always open with split channels

When I open any photo, it opens with split channels, showing RGB, red, green and blue as separate channels. I must have set some preference or preset incorrectly? How to reset?
Using Photoshop CS2, Win XP. Thanks.

They are separate channels!

You are looking at the Channels Palette – try looking at the Layers Palette instead.
