For years I wondered what the lower-case ‘f’ in the Layers palette meant, and stood for. The one that lets you apply layer effects like drop shadow, outer glow, etc. I always thought it stood for Flash, which made no sense, but the logo looked very similar to Macromedia (Adobe) Flash.
Anyways, I was watching Total Training for Photoshop CS2, and Deke said that it stood for "florin", but I don’t know the proper way of spelling it. Florin? Flourine? Flurin? And what does it mean, anyways?
It would make me feel a lot smarter, knowing. πŸ˜›

You did look in Help did you?

It is an "f" for (e)ffects or FX.

I don’t know what the f Deke is talking about!

He’s got a rather odd sense of humor, IMO.

What I found via Google:

The latin small f with hook = function = florin

Therefore: Adobe’s use of the florin (F) stands for "Function".

Another uselss bit on info that just might help me win at Jeopardy πŸ™‚

Hmm, I’d guess that there is a mathematician at Adobe.

A curly f is usually associated with a mathematical function along the line of "Let f be a function that maps … to … "

I thought it was cool to see a mathematical f in a creative program.

Well you know, Deke was a dual Art/Mathematics major in college.

Another possibility is that Adobe hired a Dutch programmer. When Adobe expressed excitement that this new feature would increase profits the programmer thought the symbol for the Dutch florin (aka guilder or gulden) would be appropriate. The coding had advanced too far to change it to ‘$’ by the time it was noticed and they were obliged to meet the marketing department’s deadline for the launch.

Just a thought πŸ™‚
