Hi,

I asked the Acrobat user group, but no one knows the answer to this. I figure someone in this group could help. Here it goes:

I have Acrobat 4.0. I have a form already printed on legal-size paper. I scanned this form into a PDF file. The scanned form looks something like this:

Name: _______________

Phone: _______________

What do I need to do to be able to open this same PDF file all the time, click on the line where it says "Name:", and be able to manually type in text there, and
then, click on the line where it says "Phone:", and manually type in text at that location.

Right now, the PDF file I just scanned in is read-only. I cannot type anything in where the lines are.

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK you can’t do that with a scanned document – a scanned document is an image and of course you cannot edit an image using vector.

I would recommend putting this on the web and using a server side programming language to accomplish this. If you’d like to stick with Adobe, her’es some tutorials:

or
just place the document into InDesign
or any page layout application
and you can type where ever you want, overtop of it.

I thought you said you wanted to do it for free
or with C++

Most folks here would have a layout app
and wouldn’t need to worry about a purchase to do it.

This works for me using Acrobat 5 (not Reader, you need the full version).

1. In Acrobat select the form tool (‘F’) and drag a box over where you want the field to be
2. Fill in the details in the Field Properties dialog that should appear.
3. Save the PDF.

Does Acrobat 4 not have a Form tool?
