I recently bought Photoshop CS2 (German version) and currently work under Windows XP. For the end of this month, Windows Wista will be available and I’m planning to switch.
However, I have heard Photoshop CS2 is having some issues running under Vista. Can someone advise if this is true and if yes, if Adobe is planning to provide an update or patch to make it run under Vista?
Thank you in advance for your replies and hints,
Thomas

I would expect CS3 to ship, and to support Vista, before I’d expect a CS2 patch to address incompatibilities.

I have had no problems with it.

Wait, just one. It keeps asking if I want to register PhotoShop. You have to run it once in administrator mode, say no, and exit. Then it works fine.

Why Vista? Dying for all of that DRM and activation and Windows genuine advantage 2.0 junk? I wouldn’t switch until I had no choice. Waste of money otherwise.

Hi Art: Well, this would be frustrating. CS2 was quite an investment and is still on sales today. I would expect Adobe will help their customers in case there are issues with Vista. Let’s see how it turns out – but i would be very disappointed if the answer will be: Sorry for CS2, buy CS3…

Robert: Well, I guess sooner or later we’ll have no other choice. Maybe it’s not necessary to switch immediately, but over time it will. New workstations will come only with Vista and one fine day, the support for XP will end. With all the bad you mentioned in your posting, there is also some good in Vista. The performance is better, it supports Hybrid-Disks and it has directX10 for graphioc applications. Also for security reasons, it makes sense to look at Vista, even if an immediate switch is not imperative necessary.

I’m running CS2 under Vista and haven’t had any problems. The only issue I’ve heard of is that the internal menu bars don’t follow the system color scheme, but I wouldn’t have noticed if someone hadn’t pointed it out. —

Why are you in such a hurry to buy Vista? I don’t intend to install it until after the first service pack gets released…

Hi Charly,

Thank you for your reply. That is indeed good news. 🙂 I was afraid there is something serious coming up that may disturb my workflow. I can also live with the issue you have mentioned. 🙂

Greetings,
Thomas from Germany

According to some of the Adobe folks on the CS3 beta board, Adobe has made a conscious design choice in CS3 to override some of the Vista theme colors there, as well.

64 bit and your new movie purchased from an MS competitor won’t play, eh? running fast, going nowhere.

Just a question: if you buy Vista, do you get both 32 bit and 64 bit versions, or must you specify?

there’s 2 versions. you need to buy the one you need

Thought so.

For those interested, here’s a link explaining why CS3 won’t be 64 bit:

I think you get both 32 and 64 bit versions on the one disk – in fact, I’ve read that there is really only *one* Vista DVD – but your activation code enables or disables features. So, with a credit card and a click of the mouse you can take the basic version all the way up to the "ultimate" version, and Microshaft makes more money.

That said, I wish Adobe would create a Linux version of CS. Red Hat Fedora is sweet, but the only image processor I’ve found is GIMP, and it pales in comparison to Photoshop.

I wish Adobe would create a Linux version of CS

As do many other Linux fans. Problem is, there are not enough of them (or at least ones willing to pay for the software) to justify Adobe spending the money to produce a Linux version.

I think Framemaker is the only Adobe application that has a Linux/Unix version, and that is only because it existed when they bought the program.

Judging by the responses in the Feature Requests forum you won’t be seeing one for a while.

You can use more than stinking 2GB of RAM (or 3 with that kludge/switch).

Uh, Don,
There was never a shipping version of FM for Linux. A beta of the (I think) 5.5 version shipped, but that was the end of the line. They’ve also dropped Mac support.
And FM’s on the cusp of the 8.0 release now, so I’d be shocked if they went to Linux.

Vista x86 will recognize 4GB, but I didn’t know that until today. I also thought I was getting an upgrade from MCE to Vista x64, but that ain’t gonna happen either as you can only upgrade to the corresponding Vista version. x86 to x86 or x64 to x64. I didn’t know that either. There’s probably some other stuff I don’t know too.

I mean, you buy a 64 bit processor and you just naturally assume….of course the fact that there’s little software to run never enters your mind until someone shakes you into reality by pointing it out…a guy can dream…

That’s nice but you are still limited to 2GB per application (1.7 after overhead) on 32-bit Operating System.

Never assume – check!

My life is apparently based on the philosophy that everything works as I expect it to and then I cope with the consequences when it doesn’t. It’s not the best approach, but there’s something to be said for blissful ignorance.

Really – when was the last time you thought about the fact that if gravity quit working you’d need a rope and a tree? :o)

I do feel the pain of those around me though and conform as best I can…

How do you apply kludge switch on Vista? There’s no boot.ini that I can seeÂ…

Not that I care, there is no need for it (the kludge) on 64-bit version. 😉

Vista x86 doesn’t need the /3GB switch. It will recognize up to 4GB.

How much of that 4GB can you assign to Photoshop? 1.7, 2.7?

This is what PS gets on Vista x64 (with 4GB installed)…
