Hi everyone, I’m new here and have scoured this forum for the answer to my question with no luck. I first came here to try to figure out why my eraser tool was acting funky. Sometimes it won’t work at all when using adjustment layers, right now it will only erase a light amount of the image. This only happens in adj. layers, I can make a dup layer and the eraser will work normally then. But this is a real PITA for my workflow. The layers are not locked, mode is normal, opacity and flow are set to 100% and the correct layer is selected. Erase to history is not checked.

So after reading here, I am trying to delete my preferences but the dialog box won’t come up when I do the alt-ctrl-shift when starting CS2. I have searched my hard drive for the .psp file under just ".psp", "pref" and many other variations and have looked in all of my Adobe folders for this file with no luck. I do have "Show hidden files checked in my windows tools. I’m stumped. I’m sure the answer is probably obvious but I have no idea what to do now. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance!

One more thing to add just to head off the question – I am not using a Wacom tablet. 🙂

Why are you erasing in adjustment layers? The layer loads with a mask which you can use to show/hide the amount of adjustment to the under lying layer, no need to lose pixels by erasing. This is the whole object of an adjustment layer, they are non destructive.
To delete your prefs file is a timing thing, try holding the three keys down, then start PS, still with the keys held down and release when you get the dialogue box.

Ignore first paragraph, heavy night last night!;(
The only way I can replicate what you describe is when I reduce the the opacity of the eraser, which you say is 100%, so something isn’t right.

You should also be able to find your "prefs" file here, (turn on view hidden files first)
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings.

Thanks so much for your help, Mike! You’re right, I should be using layer masks but I haven’t made the time to figure them out yet. I will start working on that this week, thanks for the tip. 🙂

And thank you, thank you for the suggestion to hold down the keys BEFORE opening photoshop. That did the trick and now my eraser is back to normal – woohoo! Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it. 🙂
