I would like to feather the edge of a JPEG, so that when I insert it into a document there is no sharp edge to the photo. I have tried the feather and blur functions without success. Can anyone offer me some suggestions? I’m using PS 5 LE. Many Thanks!

Try this although I’m not sure if you can with that version of PS….pretty sure you can though

use the rectangle mask tool and select the area you want to fade. press Ctrl-shift I to invert the selection. Then you feather your selection. use a nice big eraser and erase the edges. you should end up with a nicely fading image. the more you feather, the more gradual your fade will be

very easy… just use SELECTION tool to select the area of the picture you want faded on the outside of the selection.. go in about 10 pixels around the outisde.. then INVERT SELECTION.. so you wouldnt be feathering the inside of the pic.. then FEATURE selection about say more then half of what y ou went in with the original selection.. then DELETE.. that should soften the edges up! Make sure you back ground colour is the one you want

PS is pretty agricultural at feathering images. It’s very much operator skill related. Something you might have more success with is "Photographic Edges" http://www.autofx.com/ if you are getting serious about decorative photos.

Thanks to all for the help. Using the DELETE key after selecting FEATHER was the key that I was missing.
