Melissa: Have you tried copying the file to another directory and then opening.
This rarely happens to me, but is always solved by rebooting the computer. Sometimes the transferred file gets locked up by the transfer process.
close all but that image in photoshop and try to resave… this is an intermittant problem that adobe’s trying to figure out, but can’t yet recreate.
Hello,
Dave – Once I have saved the image onto my computer I can no longer open it or even copy it to another directory. I get "access is denied, make sure disc is not full" etc., error. It must have something specifically to do with MY computer it seems as if I save the same file that is erroring on my computer to a different file on the network, it is fine.
🙂 Any other suggestions? To be clear – once I have a bad file on my computer, I cant do ANYTHING with it as anything I try to do gives me the error message.
Anyone know if going to DOS and changing the attrib settings on the file works?
It’s a pain Melissa, wait a while to find out if anyone has tried it first.
Here’s what I do whenever I get the error message.
I make a duplicate of the image and close everything else in Photoshop, then I can save the image.

If you have photoshop closed and are getting that error message, that is you are just trying to move it to another directory and photoshop is not open, reboot your machine. That should release the file.
Eric,
You can change the attributes in DOS or in Windows, but I don’t think this is an attributes issue.
Peace,
Tony
I logged onto this forum to see if anyone knew how to fix the exact same problem Melissa is having. I work in a PC environment on a very large network. This file locking problem is intermittent, but it’s not just Mac files that this happens to. Our Graphics department has this (sometimes) happen to files just from one pc to the next in the same room. We have tried everything—well…not the DOS thing, but really. We are stumped. Sometimes, but not always we can go back to the machine that created the file and are able to resave it and it unlocks. Sometimes that doesn’t work. Any help is appreciated.
Abagail,
If you read this thread, and the many, many others like it by doing a search in the forum, you will discover that unfortunately there is no "cure". Adobe cannot reproduce this problem just like you or I cannot reproduce it (reliably) so it is nearly impossible to troubleshoot.
Read the this whole thread, and those like it, and you’ll get some tips on what to do when it happens.
Peace,
Tony
It is expediate for programmers to write the state of files to disk when the file is saved. If you save the the file in a remote location the possibility exists that the ‘file-state flag’ is not updated when the file opened for editing is closed. Perhaps the program cannot do this via remote, or network, connection. Perhaps the network connection is dropped and the state is not updated when the file is closed.
So what happens if you transfer files outside the program?

I have just installed Photoshop CS and started to have similar problem. I was not able to open the program as a user. Administrator works fine. The problem I found: Log as the Administrator go into — Program — Adobe folder – right click Properties — Security (if you do not see the Security Tab, go to My Computer — Tools — Folder Options — View – Uncheck “Use simple file sharing) than — continue to Advanced — and uncheck “Inherit from parent the permission entriesÂ….” — OK — make sure you the user have a “Full Control” of the folder (if not add in) — click “General” Tab uncheck “Read-only” — Apply — leave on “Apply charges to this folderÂ….” — OK. Also if you changed “Scratch Disk”, as Photoshop encourages you to do upon initial start-up than make sure you have also a “Full Control” of this drive.
I once discovered a .PNG graphics file was locked FOREEVER on my drive no matter what…rebooting , unloading all applicaitons etc… it MAY have been saved via Photoshop ?…. I cannot confirm 100%.
Is this the SAME problem described here ?.
The most common culprit for this is that the file was transferred via a CD. When copied to a hard drive, it is necessary to change the attributes. You should, however, be able to use "save as" and rename without having to change the attributes. How were the files transfered?
