I was reading Rangefinder magazine today, and i noticed this picture < http://www.rangefindermag.com/magazine/Dec06/showpage.taf?pa ge=66> (it’s the 4th picture down the page, the one with the stem growing through it). I was wondering if anyone knows how to make the orange, in Photoshop, appear like it’s peeling like that.

My initial thought was using layer masks, but that would not explain the areas that appear to be the inside of the orange. probably meticulous creation of those sections, because obviously they are not really their to begin with.

Four layers. Background, Orange Back, Flower, Orange Front.

Orange Back is probably just a masked and adjusted copy of the orange, with a little Burn to give it the illusion of shading. A little more burn (probably an adjustment layer) on the Flower to add the shadow from Orange Front.

If you mean "Can Photoshop do this easily, or automatically" the answer is no. But PS was almost certainly used for the image. A lot of artistry and work went into it, along the lines Scott mentioned.
