I recently got a new 64-bit machine, with XP x64. I’m trying to install my copy of Photoshop 7 on this machine, but when I run the installer it will run for a couple of seconds (hourglass) then stop. Looking at the process viewer, I can see the setup process running, but it is not doing anything.

I’ve tried running from CD, copying it to the HDD, running it in WinXP compatibility mode, to no avail.

I know XP x64 is not supported by Adobe, but I’ve heard of others installing PS7 on it just fine; I was wondering if there was some trick to it? Thanks!

I haven’t tried your particular combination, but you may want to boot the machine into protected mode and try running the installation as Admin.

I have not tried v7 but cs runs fine. It may actually be the windows installer (part of windows) that isn’t current. Do you have the latest SP1/2 installed? I found some programs didn’t install until the latest windows installer was put on.

I should have full admin privileges, although I’ll try protected mode. The OS is fully up to date.

I tried reinstalling on my old machine, then copying the folder over to the new one. It started up fine but of course quit partway through startup, when it couldn’t find the various registry entries that the installer makes. So it seems that Photoshop itself can run fine, just not the Installer.

I might try to see if I can manually duplicate enough of the registry for that to work.
