I would like to create an image that would create a horizontal line in a web page that would render on screen less than 1 pixel tall, is this possible.

I have seen sites that have the faintest of lines accenting transitions in content and every time I try to make a background image (or any other image for that matter) that would be super hairline it always ends up as large as a 1 px border I could make with css styling.

I am asking in this forum because I am assuming it takes an image to create such an effect. Throughout search attempts I found everything but items relating to web design graphics so I am posting.

Thanks in advance.

No. The smallest unit is one pixel. Anything smaller would be zero pixels, and thus invisible. The trick is to use a lower contrast colour. Instead of black on white use grey on white.

I been working on that and think I’m getting there with grey on grey….

Appreciate the response in quick time!

If you do much in the way of web graphics, would a tapered 1 pixel line using a gradient as fill / stroke lead to the
———————————————————— ———- line that looks like it goes to a point on each end?

You can’t do half pixels. As was suggested use a lighter to mid shade of gray to give a less think look.

Why ask? Make it and look.

Walter,

This is a one-pixel line that gets fainter at the ends and thus blends in with the background:
