CS running under XP – I often have multiple 100+MB files open at the same time and CS was choking, so I installed 2GB of RAM in addition to the 1GB that was already in my compute rand Control Panel/System reports 2.87 GB. XP is set to allocate RAM with preference to programs – but when I open CS, Memory and Image Cache reports only 1767MB available, and some operations still choke up. My scanner (running under CS/File/Acquire) still sometimes reports inadequate RAM to complete operation.

Is there any way to assign more than 1.7 out of 3GB to PS under XP?

Thanks,

WB

Do a search, either on old forum messages or on microsoft.com (or just Google it) for the "/3GB switch" and follow the directions.

It seems to work for many, but not all people/systems.

That switch, AFAIK, only works in XP Pro. There’s no indication in the post to tell us if the OP is using Pro or Home.

Along these lines, in a system using matched pairs of sticks, is it valid to use a 2G pair as one set and a 1G pair as the other? (Total 3G memory) I was told one could pair a 1G stick and a 512M stick in "A", and the same in "B".

Sounds dicy to me.

It sounds like the OP may have his memory percentage set too high. It should probably not be beyond the 55-70% range. If it’s set too high, other programs won’t have access to enough memory and will "choke".
