My laptop in CS has lost a menu item, the VARIATIONS option in Image Adjustments. It also doesn’t show up when I look at editing keyboards shortcuts. There is no listing for "variations".

Most likely, something in the installation has gotten corrupted.

Is there a "REPAIR" option when one reruns the installation, as most program offer? Or, does the install have to be redone from scratch? If it must be a complete reinstall, should I first uninstall the existing program?

Try trashing your prefs. Details in the FAQs.

Ron,

Have you tried deleting your preference file(s) before going the re-install route?

Hi Bob,

If I load PS using CTRL+ALT+SHIFT while loading, does that delete the preferences, or just ignore them for that load? I guess it must overwrite them, as PS needs a preferences file to operate, does it not?

The file is "Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs.psp", so I do have a copy of that in my routine archiving, if I should want to put it back.

It deletes them. A new prefs file will be created when you CLOSE Photoshop.

Hi Len,

I didn’t stop to think that the pref file could remove menu items, but I then realized that users can edit menus to add and remove stuff – so the pref file would seem to be the repository for that.

And, I now plan to rename the preferences file, and reload PS. If that does not work, then I’ll have to trot out the install disks.

Re my original questions – is there a "repair" option for a reinstall? I know that most of my major programs have a "repair" install mode. Should the older version be uninstalled first, to insure that there is no residue from the old files?

Just trash the prefs file. Reinstalling will have no effect on that file at all.

I trashed the pref file, but that made no difference. So, I reinstalled CS – there is no "repair mode". After the reinstall, the "Variations" listing is back. I went through and adjusted all the applicable preferences.

The filename for the CS2 preferences file is "Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp"

I did a search for the preferences file in my laptop runnning CS, and changed the name to "Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs.psp", but nothing was found.

Then I searched for *.psp, but couldn’t find that either. Then I searched for *Photoshop*.* – no luck again.

The search area was the complete C:\drive. I know the file has to be in there. CS loaded lots of stuff in in different paths from CS2. What is the name for the CD preferences file, assuming that it’s not "Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp"

By default they are in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\9.0\Adobe Photoshop CS2 Settings.

There are 18 files and a folder in mine.

[NOTE from the FAQ: You need to set Window’s Explorer Options to "View Hidden Files and Folders" to display the Preference files]

Josh,

If you will note, the location problem I had was on my laptop running CS, not CS2. I have no problem locating the file in my desktop running CS2.

The paths in general are different in CS and CS2 for most of the Photoshop stuff. The main Adobe program et al is under the Program Files folder for CS2. It is different in CS.

Your last sentence is completely wrong. For both CS and CS2 the program files are in the Program files folder under Adobe and the preferences are in the Application Data folder under Adobe.

Unless you did a non-standard install!

Those files are hidden. You must specify that Windows look for and display hidden files.
