When I try to crop pictures I cannot select the entire section that I would like to. The mouse just stops selecting. I’ve uninstalled photoshop and reinstalled it but I’m still having the same problem. I have all the current drivers according to Windows Update. I’m using a Microsoft wireless optical mouse 2.0 model 1008.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Just a thought, check the presets, use the small arrow to the right of the crop symbol at the top when the crop is selected. There are several presets to allow cropping for specific formats. If any of these are selected, it will only crop to those dimensions.

If it is, clicking the "Clear" button in the options bar should do it.

Do you have a Wacom connected?

If you have, is the pen laying on the tablet?

I just figured out what my problem is. I didn’t give you totally accurate information. I like to select the part of my image to crop using the Marquee tool. I just realized that the style was set to fixed aspect ratio. Once I set it back to normal, I had no problem selecting the correct area to crop.

I do thank all of you for taking the time to help me. We novices can really be dangerous. On a previous post I asked if anyone had any suggestions for a good Photoshop book for beginners like myself. I find I’m so overwhelmed by this software – it takes me so long to get anything accomplished. I’m still looking if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks again.

going from a total novice about 5 years ago, i can tell you the best resource i found for actually learning the program is this forum. read the manual to become familiar with the terms and functions. read this forum (daily if possible) and scan the new topics for things that interest you. you’ll see that often questions you have are asked and answered before you even knew you had the question! in no time you’ll be happily photoshopping along!

Deke McClelland’s books are very helpful. And ditto, dave. The advice here is excellent.

I got an "effects" book (ps7 tips and tricks) about a year after i had started hanging out here. this place and these people are the best on the net at what they do.

what i did was create a text file in notepad (ok, wordpad, and it’s an rich text (rtf) file) and copy and save anything in there that i found interesting or thought might be useful to remember.

here’s a link <http://www.milbut.org/pstips&links.rtf> to it that i posted on the web for when i’m away from home and want to check something i wrote. it may or may not be useful to you.

here’s your first photoshop lesson:

"There are at least 3 ways to do anything in Photoshop." 🙂

Dave, thanks for the tips – I saved it out. That’s a great idea. I will be adding to your file. I’ll take a look for the ps7 tips and tricks book too.

Each time I post a message I click the subscribe to discussion by email. Is there a way to get every post by email or must one login to read all the posts?

Exaspera, thanks for the book suggestion. I will look into that too.

Are there any tutorials on the web that you would recommend?

Photoshop is a mountain. As you climb you can feel you are almost at the summit – then the damn mountain just grows taller!

The most important thing is to stop now and again and enjoy the view along the way.

And almost each time you learn how to do something else with Photoshop, you want to run back and re-do the best pictures you did earlier (and re-do some of the not-so-good ones as well).
