Hello,
I have a question concerning the layer masks in the layer palette:

Normally I always used to edit the layer mask with the brush tool (white or black), selection tool etc – which is very practical when you only want to apply curve layers in specific regions. Like – selecting an area with the lasso, feather it and after clicking the layer mask symbol, deleting the selected area, which excludes it also from the layer mask… However, after a new install of Windows XP; I cannot seem to do those operations on the layer mask anymore, they are like fixed: Before I litterally could select the mask in the layer palette, the symbol right to the picture thumb, this is not possible anymore. I cannot delete regions of the mask by selecting and deleting the according regions in the photo.

Is there a kind of setting to activate this, or is it a misinstall/ window problem?

Thank you,

Bernie

Was your reinstall a repair or a clean install? Did you have to reinstall PS?
First thing to try is delete your prefs file (possibly corrupted) by holding down the control, shift and alt keys whilst starting PS, if you get the timing right you will be asked if you want to delete the file, say yes, a new one will be created.

Thank you – yes I renamed the "common files > Adobe > ….." folder so when restarting the files were new created, and PS now works again as it should! Luckily….

Thank you.
