Sounds like bad RAM.
Photoshop puts greater demands on your system than most other programs. Always buy high quality RAM such as Kingston.
These bad shutdowns will most likely have corrupted your preferences file too. This can cause all sorts of problems, so it’s worth resetting it as detailed in the FAQs.
Since this is happening on three separate systems, it is unlikely that all three would be due to bad RAM. A more likely cause would be a bad font on all three systems or a corrupted plugin. It is also possible an antivirus-spyware program found a Photoshop system file that it thinks is a virus and deleted it (that has been happening to me with a genealogy program I use).
As Chris stated, it never hurts to start your troubleshooting by resetting your preferences. While starting Photoshop, hold down the CTRL-ALT-SHFT keys and answer yes when asked to delete the settings.
Thanks – I’ll see if this helps
Dear Helene,
My experience is unlike yours in that it only happened on my laptop after I installed iTunes for Windows. Not only was PS7 quitting suddenly and with no warning as you described, when I was working on a document in FrameMaker and went to place a PS TIF in it, FrameMaker would quit the same way while the PS icons were being drawn in the Import dialog box! This was after using both applications successfully for several years with no such occurrence.
I bought Partition Magic v8, installed it and segregated iTunes on its own virtual (logical) drive. So far, so good.
This may help someone….
