Hi, I wonder if some kind person can help me .
I am trying to make some small thumbnail images by cropping a photo square and then resizing it to 45pxs. Unfortunately when I do this and then try to save for the web, I can’t get the file size any lower than about 9K .I have the 4-up screen showing and it tells me the original file size is only 5.6K. I must be doing something wrong. I thought I should be able to reduce the file size (and quality) down to a reasonable level but 9K seems big to me for such a tiny (dimensions) file….and I don’t understand how the ‘optimized’ file can be bigger than the original
Any ideas please?

Where do you see this 9K size?

If it’s in the explorer Window, then that tells you how much space the file takes on disk which (unintuitively) is not exactly the file size, since it takes allocation blocks into account.

Do a get info to get the exact file size (in bytes).

At only 45px by 45px you should be able to use a .gif with limited colours – and get a file size of < 1Kb using Save for Web

<http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/4167/natvq7.jpg> The above link is to a screen print of the file sizes I am getting when I try to save using jpeg. I don’t understand why the optimized file is bigger than the original.
Yes, I can get the file size down to 2.2K if I save as a gif but all my understanding of optimization has ‘gone out the window’ which is why I am asking about jpegs :).

Uncheck the option to embed the ICC profile for starters
