My wife was messing around with the original jpeg from our camera and by accident selected save instead of save as and loss the original jpeg. Is there any way to recover the original? I remember windows use to have an "attic" you could go to recover stuff. Is there something similar on computers now days? We are not techies so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

sorry to say david, the original is lost.

I had a few similar experiences back when i started using a digital camera. now when i copy images from my camera to the computer the 1st thing i do is to select all the new images in windows explorer (crtl-a when in the folder), open properties (right click the selected images and select "Properties") and check the "read-only" box. that way, even if i forget and do "save" instead of "save as" i’ll get an error saying the original image is write protected. it’s saved my but a number of times.

Did you delete it from the camera? If not it is probably still there and can be downloaded again.

If you deleted it it is gone. In future make a backup copy first, then mess around.

If she didn’t close the file after Saving, she can get the original back via the History palette. I’d guess it’s too late now, but next time…

if you haven’t used your memory card since the incident there is a very good chance that any number of file recovery programmes will recover the original jpeg.
Hope this helps.
Geoff.

David,

If you did a "save as" to a location on your computer, the file should still be on your memory card. If you have deleted the file from your camear but not used the camera in the interim, the prog at this link will recover it for you http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm
