Problems with CS-2 and Epson 2400

Here’s my problem: I print from Photoshop onto my Epson R2400 printer and every second, fourth or seventh print (the pattern varies) gets spit out of the printer after only a portion of it has printed. If there is more paper in the stack loader, it will be run through blank one after another down to the bottom of the stack.

Sometimes the printer will print 90% of the picture, sometimes just a few lines. That varies, too. I have had the problem with all kinds of paper, Epson and otherwise. I have tried using the single sheet loader. I have reinstalled the driver several times, even trying the one from the British web site. I have turned off "Advanced Printer Features." I have reduced my Photoshop memory allocation to 50% (of 1GB). The problem pops up if I’m making a single 13×19, and it happens if I’m running some 4×6’s.

The paper begins its feed just fine. There is no detectable jamming or loading problem, until the paper spits out prematurely and the Epson Status Monitor tells me there is a mis-load on the paper.

I have been on the phone with Epson for hours and now they conclude the problem must be with Photoshop. I am skeptical, particularly since I can’t find any reference to the problem at the Adobe site.

So, does anyone have a suggestion for me? This printer is getting expensive! Thanks. MB

Michael:

I have this same printer, and although I’ve never experienced this issue, I’ve seen it come up in another forum:

In this case, changing the USB cable seemed to have fixed the problem.

Well, it kind of starts out that way. But it’s been a great printer for me (I’ve had it a year). It’s a thirsty inkjet, but the prints are excellent.

Thank you both. Beerfueled, your name doesn’t do you justice.

You’re both right about the quality of the prints. After years of waiting, this printer is the first tool to make me not miss the look and feel of my old Ilford fiber-based prints.

Having tried every other solution I can think of, I believe I’m going to install a new USB card and cable. I’ll keep you posted.

OK, here’s the posting. Success! (I think.) I bought a new 20 dollar USB card, installed it, moved my USB cable from the old sockets to the new, and have now made about 30 prints without a problem.

I guess the lesson is that a computer linkage can work fine for one kind of accessory (say, a USB hard drive) but not work for printing. I suppose it has something to do with the printer’s need for constant data flow. Then again, if I knew what I was talking about I’d have had this fixed a long time ago.
