Photoshop CS 2 doesn’t open up certain files

My copy of CS2 was working perfectly fine, and then this problem randomly cropped up:

Whenever I goto edit certain files Photoshop opens up but refuses to load them (no error, no hang, just doesn’t do anything). I’ve tried loading files through double clicking, drag and dropping, ctrl-o, and bridge…all without success. Photoshop also won’t create any new files (ctrl-n displays the screen it’s supposed to, but once I’ve selected "OK" it doesn’t create/open a canvas/image). The weird part is that it’ll open certain files without a problem, but there is no disconcernable among pattern them (file extension doesn’t play a role). Furthermore, all of these images were created by the same original installation, so origin doesn’t factor in either.

I’ve tried repairing Photoshop using the CD, as well as completely uninstalling and creating a fresh install–both to no avail.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I’m in the middle of a large job for a client, so this is rather in opportune timing.

Thanks.

See if you can open them in ImageReady. If so, save them as Tiffs with a new file and see if these will open in PS.

ImageReady, interestingly enough, does open up the files fine. Unfortunately, Photoshop refuses to open up the new Tifs.

I found a workaround: opening the file up in Imageready and then clicking the "Edit in Photoshop" button.

Still, I’d much rather figure out what the real source of the problem is–if it all possible. Having to load up an additional program and mess around with it every time I want edit or create a new file in Photoshop would be a pretty big time-sink.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Try resetting Photoshop’s Preferences file as detailed in the FAQs. It may have become corrupted following a power-out or bad shutdown.

I reset the preferences file as per <http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.ef4a07f/0> It, unfortunately, didn’t fix the problem.

Sorry Mr President, I should have been cleared. A corrupt prefs might have been causing the file to save badly. If that was the case, resetting will only stop the problem happening on future files.

It may not have anything to do with it of course, but trashing the prefs is always a good place to start almost any trouble shooting as it can cause all sorts of strange behavior in PS.

Ah, gotcha. I’ll certainly keep that in mind for further reference.

On a whim I decided to update to 9.0.2, and now everything seems to work fine! I can only assume that some other file got corrupted, and that the update over-wrote it.

Anyways, thanks for your help Chris. Now it’s back to work with me ;P
