Am running PS-CS2 with XPSP2. Adobe Gamma shows in Control Panel, but will not load when I click icon – likewise when I approach it from Programs>common files>calibration>adobe gamma.exe. I checked msconfig to be sure it was in my startup and it is. I also tried to repair (corrupted file?)by running CS2 CD and running "repair" feature.

Is there something I can do short of a complete uninstall, clean registry and reinstall?

Thanks for any and all help.

Ken,

As I recall, Adobe Gamma requires Administrator privileges to run. Is your user account a member of the Administrators group, if not the Adminstrator account itself? If not, you’ll need to login as the Administrator (assuming this is your own PC and you can, else contact your Administrator) and either run Adobe Gamma from there or modify your normal user account to be in the Administrators user group.

Ken,

I checked msconfig to be sure it was in my startup and it is<<

In addition to what Daryl has said, what is in your startup folder is Adobe Gamma Loader.exe NOT Adobe Gamma.cpl which is the Control Panel Applet.

Adobe Gamma Loader.exe just loads the monitor profile created by Adobe Gamma.cpl, and has nothing to do with whether or not Adobe Gamma.cpl runs or not.

Daryl & Len–

Thanks for your replies. I am the only user of my PC; thus *am* the Administrator. To Len, what do/can I do about Adobe Gamma.cpl? I found that file in WIN Explorer in Common Files>Calibration – now what?

Thanks.

Move it to the folder other *.cpl gadgets are (system32 if I recall it all right). Restart the system afterwards and it should appear in the Control panel.

iirc wasn’t htere a problem running the gamma applet when the new xp desktop was running as opposed to classic (high performance) mode?

I copied the AdobeGamma.cpl file and put it in WINSystem32 as suggested and still no luck in loading the app. Any other suggestions from anyone?

Dave–

Thanks for following thru. I *am* running in XP mode, however, I thought that was a problem *only* if the Adobe Gamma icon didn’t show up in Control Panel. Mine does show up but will just not load – nothing happens when I double click on it. Also, it *did* load several months ago and I was running in XP mode then. Do you still think it is worth a try?

Do you still think it is worth a try?

anything that takes 10 seconds to test is worth a try… 🙂

barring that, create a new user account, give it admin privleges and test it there. could be your xp admin acct is corrupt somehow.

Dave–

I tried changing my XP mode from XP to classic with no luck. Also creating a new account with administrator privelges. I am getting frustrated:-( I spend a great deal of time in PS and am involved with printing art work for both myself and for sale – and need to use Adobe Gamma. Darn!!!!!!!

Ken,

I don’t know what to suggest to get Adobe Gamma working, but hopefully someone from Adobe will chime in with a suggestion. Meanwhile, you might consider either WiziWYG or QuickGamma as viable alternatives. WiziWYG is a product for which a free, monitor-only calibration version was available from Praxisoft, but they no longer seem to have a web presence other than a logo. However, you can find a download of WiziWYG at <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/8064>. WiziWYG is very similar in use to Adobe Gamma but also includes support of LCDs, which is an added plus.

For a while, Norman Koren suggested using WiziWYG if you could only afford a software/visual calibration, but now he favors QuickGamma. You can find his discussion about monitor calibration at <http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html>, along with links to the related downloads of QuickGamma and other utilities that may help.

Hope that helps.

Daryl

Besides,

Pantone Huey: +- 105 euros.

Pantone Eye One Display LT: +- 160 euros

ColorVision Spyder2 Suite: +- 170 euros.

Pantone Eye One Display 2: +- 230 euros (I have this one myself).

They are in the low-medium range of calibration and they are all way better than using Adobe Gamma (or whatever eyeball method).

You’ve got good writen reviews of them in Northlight Reviews <http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/reviews.html>.

Hope it helps a bit 🙂

(PS. All aproximated prices include an aproximated VAT)

Gustavo–

I just spent much of the morning reading about all of your suggestions – thanks much. There were also some great links to other areas re: both software & hardware calibration programs. As a result, I have decided to upgrade. I am also attending a full-day seminar & show in NYC sponsored by Epson for Advanced art photography printing, etc. I’m sure Adobe will be there as well as a rep from Colorvision and/or Pantone.
