Before I left my job to stay at home with my children, I was a self-taught graphic designer. The companies I worked for had purchased Photoshop and Illustrator, and I became very familiar with both programs (the last version I used was in 1999-2000). I never laid out multiple pages, so I have limited knowledge of Pagemaker. Most of the work I did was designing ads, point-of-sale, logos, etc.

Now I am at home with my young children and I would like to freelance from home, but I’d like to avoid the $600+ full versions of both programs. Plus I am sure the full versions contain many more features that I would never/rarely use, such as for web design.

Could someone please recommend a program that possibly combines the photo editing and design features as Photoshop and Illustrator do?

Thank you!

Just about every camera manufacturer provides a Photo editor on the accompanying CD. Sometimes this is "Photoshop Elements", which can also be purchased independently. It would certainly do all you want.

You could also look at Serif products at <http://www.serif.com/>

One program … even Adobe has two. You can get some of the functionality of Photoshop in Photoshop Elements, at a third the price. Illustrator’s drawing capabilities are harder. I don’t think Adobe has a low end entry into that smaller market. AutoDesk (the AutoCad people) might have something.

For multiple pages you need a page layout program like InDesign. There may be cheaper ones.
