Document window flickering in photoshop

Hello, I recently installed my copy of photoshop 7 onto my newly purchased notebook PC, running windows XP with 2GB of RAM. When I open an image to begin working, I get a random "flicker" effect on the image and image window only. I thought it might have been a bugged install of photoshop itself, yet when I open the same image in Corel painter, I get the exact same problem. Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

have you updated the video drivers on the new system?

just tried updating the driver now, and there was no update available.
