I couldn’t figure out why CS2 took multiple seconds to load the first image after CS2 was launched.

I have a new, very fast computer and all other applications respond immediately.

Then, by happenstance I was able to load a very large image instantly. I finally figured out why: I was disconnected from the Internet.

This perplexed me so I installed a network sniffer. As it turns out one of the first action CS2 does it to perform an ARP. This takes seconds and PS waits until ARP completes before loading the first image.

Then I looked at the network packets – Photoshop is performing a *lot* of actions which are totally unnecessary for my needs.

In short, what I now do before launching PS is to disconnect from the network and disable virus checking. PS CS2 now runs much, much faster.

Since I have a lot of RAM, I also installed a RAM disk and set up my environment so that all temporary files (except, of course, for the PS scratch disk) use memory for a disk. Since the OS and PS put a whole bunch of files in the temporary folder the system runs faster and when I turn off the computer all the temp files are gone forever.

I leave that as an exercise for the student.
