Is there an easy way to separate the drop shadow effect from the current layer? I wand to be able to manipulate the drop shadow separately from the existing object. I am previous user of PSP X and PSP allows you to create the drop shadow on a separate layer automatically. I have just starting using CS

Right-click on the effect and select "create layer." If you still want to be able to have the ease of editing the drop shadow effect from the menu, you may want to "create layer" from a duplicate of that layer.

must be doing something wrong, because when i try to create a layer with just the effect copied, the layer is blank. it copies the intended effect, not the actual drop shadow.

but if i create layer from the drop shadow effect, it places the new layer above the copied layer and it looks like a mask.

does that make sense?

ok. now i’m really confused.

1. i copied the layers drop shadow effect and pasted it below the original layer. the layer is blank.

2. i went back to the original layer and right clicked and selected create layer. it created what looks like a clipping mask and placed it above the original layer.

3. once the "clipping mask" was created, the drop shadow I was originally expecting in the layer created in step one, shows up.

have i inadvertently discovered the correct sequence of steps? or is there a more direct method?

thanks for the help. it has gotten me much further along 🙂

Create Layer should make the drop shadow layer underneath the object layer. Always has. There is no clipping mask involved.

When you duplicated the layer you should then have turned off visibility by clicking the eyeball. Lock it, leave it alone, forget it.The only reason for duplicating the layer at all is so you will have something to work with when you mess it up.

No pasting is necessary here. If you are pasting you already made a mistake. Go back in History before you did Create Layer.

thanks ed. i have discovered why i am having so many problems. i am having problems on the layers where i use an inner shadow as well as a drop shadow. it works fine on the layers with drop shadows only. so i create the copy of the drop shadow before i apply the inner shadow and it is working fine now.

thanks for the help!
