How would I get the effect of painted wood? I want to turn some photos of old wood stained furniture into furniture that looks like it has been painted with a brush.

Thanks for any help.

There may be many ways to do what you seek – here is a start to get you moving in at least one direction.

1 – select a piece of wood from the image

2 – CTRL+J it into a new layer

3 – in the new layer make sure that the copied and pasted bit is active (eg select with magic wand on a blank/transparent bit > invert the selection)

4 – grab a brush > set a color > turn brush into multiply blend mode > paint over the selection

5 – what should happen at #4 above is that the paint colour interacts with the selected image to somewhat enhance the colour from a flat fill effect

6 – experiment with adjusting opacity/fill sliders on the active layer

7 – now turn to the layer (note: layer) blend mode and adjust to something else such as Screen and further adjust/experiment with opacity/fill slider effects.

Eventually you may be able to build up a combination of blend modes that favor towards brightening or darkening the selected image.

Note that in the above it is important to keep the selection active as it helps to lay down the brush colour onto and into the selected image only keeping things nice, neat and tight.

Whatever image mode you are in try to note the colour applied just in case there are repeated occasions of the same texture that you wish to enhance.

In either case a generality is apply blend modes to brush AND/OR apply blend modes to CTRL+J’ed layer AND/OR do both.

Let’s know how it goes cos it is equally fun finding out if it worked ok for you.

(someone may always post a better methodology based on the above or totally different method and so forth … )

ps – it need not be a flat colour – you may wish to add complexity by creating suitable gradients rather than flat colors with adjusted blends
