Epson, if you want archival quality, pigmented-ink prints.

If ink costs are going to be paid by your company (assuming that’s who you mean by "them"), definitely opt for the Epson.

I was under the impression that the canon was dye ink also?

William,
I think that’s Michael’s point — Epson ink is pigment based, Canon is dye based. See < http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/creative/2006/12/inktype/ind ex.php> for an overview. Art

PS I vote Epson.

Thanks for all your help. A couple differences I was pointed out, the Epson has fewer nozzles than the cannon and that article says that the dye ink has a wider color gamut, are these differences I would even notice? accurate, showable color stunning prints are what I’m after.

Given that you’re going to dump some medium big bucks for the printer, I think I’d find a dealer that carries both lines and ask them to pull a sample image (that you provide) from each. Another option may be to look a the Qimage site; I like and use the software, but they’re another possible source for printer comparisons.

"Wider gamut" could be something or nothing — depends where the wider portion falls and if it’s in a color area that would be noticable without a side-by-side comparison.

I have the Epson R2400 and love it, but have not owned the other for comparison…

Don’t discount the HP B9180. I just got this printer, it is relatively inexpensive at $600, an 8 ink system where you do not have to change inks to change paper, and produces a fantastic image. It is also a pigmented ink system. It has very wide printheads and prints very fast and doesn’t waste ink as badly as the Epson series of printers do. <br><br>I feed it Epson paper however, as the HP paper is junk and the Epson paper is very good and widely available.

I can’t comment on the Canon but I’m delighted with my R2400. Ink costs are pretty dramatic with the carts only 12.5 ml and a full head clean carried out for any reason, like a cartridge swap. I’ve just installed a CIS with the new Lyson inks and this seems excellent and will bring running costs back to my budget. HTH.

Absolutely Epson. I have never used anything but. Epson print technology and color matching is unparalleled. I use a photo 1280.
