I have CS2 + Macromedia Suite and I need to change out the "text" on GIF files.

Is there a way that the programs will allow be to manipulate the text within the photo? Similar to the way you can manipulate pieces of an object within an Illustrator file or PDF.

Yes, but not what your looking for I think, you need layered files. GIF and JPEG do not suport layers.

Those files are flattened. The "type" is only pixels, just like the rest of the image.

Where do these files come from? If you created them you should have the original layered files to work from.

Basically, you use the clone tool to replace the text with similar background colors. Make new text.

Then save in PSD or some other format that will allow you to alter the text later. (You can use Save for Web to get gif or jpg versions).

thanks,

Actually the photo came off of a web page so I do not have the original layers. So right now I’m looking at a photo that is one layer only… and I was afraid of that!

I will look up on how to use the "clone" tool to replace the text. That may be my only option??

thanks

If you grabbed it off a web page there may be a copyright issue. Do you have permission from the owner of the image to use it?

No on the premission, but i do understand what you are saying. I am new at designing web pages and it helps me to begin by using an existing web site (template) and be crative and learn.

I plan to use my own photographs so the GIF I need to alter is not a photograph GIF, it is an image button from their TOC.

I am importing a webpage into frontpage, (maybe GoLive if it allows me too (?)), than using the template as a starting point to design my page. I want to modify the template to my colors/pictures preference and wording. This is a small obsure web site and when I am done they will not know i used theirs as a template.

any tricks on using clone or as important, importing in a webpage – alter/modify and than ftp upload to my web host?

thanks

Ok i agree on Frontpage, but as a newbie it seems to be easier to get around….

I will try to import using my GoLive and try this powerful software out again… it kicks my ass each time!

Any tips on how to import in an existing webpage (simple-no thrills) and modify, than save to new name for uploading later via ftp?

Again, you are getting into the copyright issues here. The person who designed the page you download will not appreciate seeing you copying his work, and may respond with a lawyer.

You should learn the way I did. Find a page you like, look at the source code if you can’t figure out how something is done, and then building your own page with the inspirations that come from your learning.

What you are proposing is not far off from downloading Romeo and Juliette, search and replacing the names, and then saying you wrote a play called Fred and Gladys. (One difference is that doing that would merely be stupid, not illegal, as Romeo and Juliette is out of copyright by now.)

BTW, it is often easier to create your own buttons, and add text as you wish, than cloning out old text and putting yours in its place. It will look better, and you will have learned how to build a nice button.

…. and it is ridiculously simple.

Photoshop has some handy button styles if you want a flying start.
