After a bad computer crash (no such thing as a good one, I suppose) and a reinstall of everything, I cannot open any image formats in Photoshop, even if I have that software open. Only the dumb "windows picture and fax view" will open images from my website or emails.

How do I get the Photoshop7 icon to be recognized in that Open With section so it is the format that opens the .jpg .gif and .tiff images I want?

Thanks ever so much……mm

Set up your associations in Windows Explorer.

Tools > Folder Options > File Types > Advanced

Tried that. Strange thing: Photoshop icon is listed there to open the very files I want. However, the Open With command says it can’t find it. In "Advanced" a whole selection of other icons are there–but not one for Photoshop. I don’t get it…..

what else can I try……m

It’s all there in Explorer Tools > Folder Options > File Types > Advanced but not very self-evident.

You can create "new" actions like "edit" to appear in the context menu or re-assign existing ones to different applications.

It would take a long time to explain but if you experiment you will see the way. If you make a mess, you can always go back with "Set Default".

Hip Hip Hooray!!!! Thank you John!!! I’m not sure what I did, and after about 6 tries, (no way was it possible to change that darn windows fax view to Photoshop) I gave up, and for the heck of it clicked "restore". Goody, goody—-it went back to the way it was before the crash. I don’t recall ever changing the settings, but the installer might have.

Thanks for the suggestion to "experiment"–it worked!…….mm

John, I’ve read everything, tried everything, and that darned Windows picture and fax viewer won’t go away. Went to Explorer, etc.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

That business with Windows Explorer Folder Options is pretty hit or miss.

You could try setting everything to default for each file type and start from there.

What is it you are trying to achieve?

Marie.
Keep in mind everything you did to rectify the problem. I had exactly this on my Laptop, set all the file associations to what I wanted them to be only to find that everytime I install Microsofts periodical updates they revert back to how MS think they should be. The only positive thing to come out of all this is that it has been the final straw to have broken the camels back – further computer replacements will NOT repeat NOT have Windows installed. Macs here I come 🙂

Well the Windows updates on "Patch Tuesdays" have done a few funny things but they never changed my file associations!

Thanks for the prompt reply . . my goal, which may sound petty, is to get rid of the Microsoft picture and fax viewer icon. While everything opens with Adobe, it’s just frustrating when I can’t get things to change the way I want them.

I’m glad there are people like you to help people like me. I get around pretty well most of the time, built our website, making a movie for my nephew, but something, as simple as this should have been, drives me crazy.
