Do you have the move tool selected? Have you selected (highlighted) the layer you want to move (making sure it’s not the background, which can’t be moved without converting it to a normal layer)?
Yes, and I am not trying to move the background either. I am trying moving any other layer and it just does not work. It worked fine CS but now when I installed CS2 it stopped working.
Every document? Is the little cross on the top of the Layers palette clicked ?
Try trashing your preferences, then.
how do you trash your preferences? No, the cross on the layers palette is not locked.
I trashed my preferences and it did not work. But I also uninstalled photoshop completely and reinstalled and it still does not work. I still cannot nudge an object using the directional keys on my keyboard. Please help.
Try holding ctrl key while using the arrow keys.
Nope, still does not work.
Are you on the move tool?
Are you running some utility that could be intercepting the keypresses? For example, one of those utilities that controls the media buttons or something? If so, try disabling it and see if PS behaves.
no, I am not using a program that intercepts key presses and I don’t think it’s a program with an external program because I was able to nudge with photoshop CS but when I installed CS2, I cannot nudge anymore. I do have the move tool selected.
Have you tried clicking on the object with the move tool before nudging? This shouldn’t be necessary, but worth a try.
What resolution is the image and at what percentage are you viewing it?
The arrow keys nudge by one pixel at a time. If you are viewing a very high resolution image at an odd percentage it is possible you are simply not seeing the results because the movement is less than one screen pixel.
Try this: Make a new 72 ppi document using the 640×480 preset. Viewing it at 100% (Alt+Ctrl+0), draw a square using the rectangular marquee and fill with black. Go Ctrl+Shift+J to put this in a new layer.
Now select the move tool and try the arrow keys. Are they working under these conditions? One click should nudge the graphic one pixel. One Shift+click should nudge it by ten pixels.
I tried that and it still does not work. The history does not show any movement either, which even if could not see it, it should show up in the history.
Try using the transform tool. ctl-T on a selection, then use the arrows. The selection should move in increments. If this doesn’t work, then I suspect something in the keyboard translation table. Did you install the same language version?
John Gregson
it does not work with the transform tool either. I installed CS2 with the default language that appeared which said English. Is there someway of checking?

Not that this helps the OP, but here the arrow key will nudge at least one screen pixel. So if your view is less than 100 percent, one nudge may cover many image pixels, view greater than 100 percent, a nudge will then move just one image pixel.
I tried installing on another computer and I get the same problem. Also when I use the text tool and I press the directional keys it spits out symbols like parentheses and commas. It seems as though the keys are not being recognized as directional keys and it occurs on two completely seperate computers.
Is your operating system’s default language English? Is it set to use an English code page for the keyboard?
Hi
Did you ever find the solution to this, I have the same problem?
Thanks
Brian
