I would define this problem as a series of short pauses of about 10 seconds seemingly at random, but resulting from some user input such as a mouse click anywhere. The software always recovers, but the pauses continue again after awhile. There is no permanent crash or hang where the software needs to be forcibly shut down.

I’m in winXP latest SP, all latest updates
Machine has 2G ram
Processor is a 64bit Athlon 3200+
Free Disk space is 90GB
Video card is DIAMOND AGP X1600 w512MB RAM
Video resolution is 2560 x 1600
Photoshop is version 9 (CS2), with all latest updates

This only recently started happening… so I assume a change on my machine is causing it. Perhaps at the installation of the video card, which is fairly new.

Test the video driver by tuning hardware acceleration down to zero. If that fixes it, you’ll need an updated driver.

That didn’t fix the problem. Anyone have any input? Thanks 🙂

What is the size of the brush, if you are painting?

What are your settings in Photoshop (memory allocated, number of cache levels (this is a huge screen), etc.)

Do check for updated drivers anyways.

I really appreciate your replies.
I am not painting – this happens at literally any mouse click- like when I click onto a new tool. This happens with or without files open, meaning that it is not a result of processing some action or command.

I opened up PS and brought up the prefs, it hung for about 60 seconds. (no files open).

Cache levels: 6
Maximum memory used: 969MB (55% of 1762MB)

I have never touched these settings. I’ll try to go read u pon just what they may do…

During these temporary hang-ups, the CPU usage is at 100%. Photoshop version is 9.02

Hey,
I tried closing the info palette. No change, so I restarted PS. Still no change.

damn. i saw your "Hey" and got my hopes up. 🙁 how about font previews? turn those off in the prefrences and restart ps.

other musings…

any utilities running? like a drive imaging util (ghost or something?)

could aggressive anti-virus scanning be hanging you up? (i have mccaffee at work that insists on running at the worst times!)

any other apps running at the same time?

anything funky at all running? (check start> run> msconfig)

have you scanned for spyware/viruses?

have you reset the prefrences (details in the forum FAQ)?
