I mean the men and women who are highly skilled and trained in Photoshop CS2 are the ones that I’m referring to, the ones that are at the top of the Photoshop CS2 food chain. Do they earn a living with Photoshop CS2? Or can they supplement their income with it?

And notice how I’m specifying CS2, as CS2 is Photoshop with all of the bells and whistles. There’s lots to know and learn about Photoshop CS2, and those who mastered the program have quite a bit more knowledge stored up away in their heads than the average person does.

So, I ask the community…do Photoshop wizards use their skills to help them earn an income and if so, what and how do they use Photoshop for in order to earn that income? Is their a way for someone like that to supplement their income if they can’t use it for full time employment? If the answer is yes to all of this, what is the Photoshop users job title?

(Sorry to mix the subjects of art and money up together, but sometimes the two worlds overlap.)

The people who make the most money on Photoshop, other than on photography itself, are probably the people who write books and lecture on it — they probably work very hard, make a good living, but don’t get rich on it.

<sarcasm>No, we’re all starving artsists</sarcasm>

I use PS everyday at my job. I’m not a millionaire, but I have food on the table, a roof over my head and can read/watch/listen to the entertainment I want.

I’d say most expert PS users do use PS to earn money (they also use Illustrator, InDesign an many other design softwares, not to mention their skill/talents in Illustration, photography adn design)

Lots and lots of people work for ad agencies and publishers (as I did for years) using Photoshop all day, every day. I’d wager these outnumber photographers by a wide margin.

I doubt that writing books and lecturing makes up a significant share of PS users.

It seems to me that the clear majority of the graphic art in print has Photoshop involved. True?

There’s also restoration work.

I’d say ‘Photoshop expert user’ is not a job. There’s people out there using Photoshop for a very wide range of jobs and a very tiny set of them could be labelled as ‘Photoshop experts’ and I am not very sure they are filthy rich.

The rest, like many of the users here, are working in a image-related industry (printing, prepress, advetising, multimedia creation, graphic design…).

And, as Cybernetic Nomad, say, we manage to put hot food on our dinners but if it is lobster or hamburger depends on the trade itself, not on our use of the tool.

I have met some Photoshop ACE and they were not rich and, in fact, the had to strive hard to earn their lives as they were teaching Photoshop and InDesign. Not a job I envy.

Check out www.bertmonroy.com I refer to Bert regularly because he’s probably one of the most well known PS artists. Then, you tell me, can he make some money using his PS skills? By the way, check out the purchase prints page,

I agree with Gustavo. Employers don’t care about the level of your expertise; they only care about whether you can do the job or not. I know many people who don’t know that much about Photoshop at all but they are able to follow the basic procedures for a particular job. A lot of "experts" are probably working below their skill level.

But someone has to come up with the procedures.

You may not get rich, but you can make a decent living with Photoshop.

I wouldn’t call myself an "expert" by a long shot, especially in CS2, still trying to find time in the day to play with all the bells and whistles. I do suppliment my GD income with private tutoring though. I don’t think $60 and hour to teach newbies how to use PS in conjunction with their real estate businesses is too bad. Definately nothing remotely artistic about it though.
