I’m looking to automate this process somewhat as I have a number of images that I want to appear as ceramic tiles with and without grout. they should be showing appropriate shadowing and beveling as if the image where an actual mural of ceramic tiles.
The images are 604 x 377 pixels and are representive of murals that are 34" x 21.25" with 4.24" tiles (so will have 8 x 5 rows of tiles).
I believe I could set up some kind of (almost) transparent layer I could bring in to each image and lay over them to appear they are tiled walls.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Make one tile with grout on one side and top OR bottom. Define it as a Pattern under Edit. Fill a layer or selection with pattern.

…. and the tools you need to apply the "appropriate shadowing and beveling" can be found in the Layer Styles.

And applying them can be recorded as an action.

Thanks for your sugestions. I’m getting closer. Only problem I’m having with above instrucions is ‘Define Pattern’ is greyed out no matter which layer or selection tool I use. ???
Also, I like your idea of recording as an action Nomad, (that is like recording a macro right?). It’s been a while since I’ve seen a turtorial on that, can you refresh my memory as to where that feature is?

Is the thing you are trying to Define as a Pattern rectangular?

yes, I’ve tried selecting one square tile, and two squares adjacent to each other. So I have tried both square and rectangular.

Window -> Actions

Will bring the action palette into view

CReate a new action and record what you want.

I recommend testing on dummy files first.

I think the OP is still struggling with Define Pattern. Not sure what the problem is.

EDIT: You aren’t using a Shape Layer are you?

Yes Ed, I belive I am using a Shape Layer. My title shows: tile.psd @ 100% (Shape 1, Layer Mask/8) I remember using the shape tool to start my tile image, then went on to using layer mask to get the transparency, bevel, embose and stroke around the tile.
I am obviously a newbie and thank you all for the attention you have given me.

If I may slide in an off-topic question? I have many images on my computer, some 72ppi others 300ppi and various other resolutions. Is there a software package that has the ability to search and/or sort on the resolution of image files?

Yes. It’s called Photoshop 😉

You’ll need to rasterize that Shape before defining as a pattern. Right-click on it and choose Rasterize Layer. You might want to Duplicate it first so you don’t lose anything if you change your mind.
