Hello,

I’ve been using an old version of Paint Shop Pro for awhile, and I think it’s time for me to make the leap to Photoshop. I want to have the best tool and to follow along easily with all those tutorials on the web. My goal is to be able to create better graphics for my web sites. I’m not really interested in what can be done with digital photos. Here are some questions I have:

1) I’m a part-time grad student, and I qualify for the academic version that several sites sell. Is the academic version the same as the full version? Can I continue using it after I graduate? This is for personal/hobbyist use.

2) Some places on eBay sell the latest Photoshop for about $300. They claim to do this by packing the previous version of Photoshop with the upgrade. Is this valid?

3) If I did go and buy Photoshop CS (the previous version), does it have pretty much all the common functionality that any normal person would need with Photoshop? What is the oldest version of Photoshop that I should consider using?

4) Do the upgrade packages only work with the previous version? Or so they upgrade any old release to the newest version?

Thanks!

The academic version is identical to the commercial version except for price.
Adobe could be unique in as far that it allows the qualifying purchasers (check with the reseller) to actually make money with this version. The only place to buy a "legit" copy of PS is through an Adobe reseller or via dowlnload (try it free for 30 days)from Adobe, (especially so with the academic version)
You cannot legally buy CS, CS2 is the current release, CS3 maybe May. The academic version is a cheap way to get on the upgrade path. HTH

"Sorry, Spacerook, you’re under arrest"

"What’s the charge Officer?"

"Purchasing the previously released version of a software package when a newer version has been made available".

"Is that a serious offense, Officer?"

"Well, not really, but since you’re still a student it _will_ go on your permanent record".
