I’ve got a weird and probably distinct problem. My scanner I am using is absolutely abysmal.(It looks like somone mistakedly splattered random dots of ink on some sections, the lines are grainy and dotted, and they are generally very low quality) Do you have any suggestions on how I could edit scanned pictures in photoshop so they would not look quite as atrocious?(As in, remove splotches, make lines more uniform, etc.)

I am also looking to color these images since I am creating an online webcomic.

I am also stuck with the scanner(It’s a loooooooong story)

Thanks in advance for your help, I most certainly need it.

Did you clean the glass before scanning? Use a soft lint free cloth and a glass cleaner and polish with a dry cloth.

If it is line drawings and text try saving as a .gif and not .jpg or ..bmp.

Try scanning at a higher DPI.

It would probably helop if you posted a link to the scan result so we could see what the problem is. At this point it’s anyone’s guess – could simply be terrible scan settings, the wrong driver, etc.

If a completely new scanner is dirty, that’s simply beyond my line of reasoning, it looks pretty clean.

It may look clean but the scanning process will pick out anything that is on the glass.

I already tried scanning it as Gif…..doesn’t really make any different results.(That are very noticeable)

I scan at 600 Dpi because of someone else’s recommendations

As you can see from a scan of my older drawings(Please disregard the fact I can’t draw straight lines that well) the lines look really jagged, and I can’t quite figure out why.

Did you do the drawing with an ink pen, that looks like ink bleed along the paper fibres. As I said above the scanner will pick out everything. It also looks like there is dirt on the drawing which is giving you the black dots.

Sure. I and just to note on the other comments.

What scan mode? Line art, B&W, Greyscale, Colour?

Most likely Line Art or B&W; that’s your problem – try it in greyscale or full color. Setting it to B&W is limiting the scan to either Black or White…anything in between is ’rounded up or down’ to one or the other resulting in your jaggie furry…<G>

To clear things up, that last scan was in B&W. The reason I used it was because grayscale+paint=Disaster area.(If you’ve ever tried coloring something like that, you know what I mean)

Anyway, I gave grayscale a spin(I also pulled out my 7 year old scanner, which scans much better, thank you. Apparently it wasn’t thrown out…) and I found that it works kind of well with photoshop. Please ignore the bad 10 minute coloring job because my free trial to CS expired in 20, but could I, say, make the lines look black instead of gray? And is there an easy way to color in the area that are missed due to blockage, or do I have to just zoom and color manually?

The update

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v296/Clincher/BlueForestPh otoshopCSsPaint.jpg

A postscript……
I was previously able to cover up the bad lines with colorful backgrounds(All done on paint, handmade), but since it was not in any reasonable time to make a regularly updated webcomic, I had to scrap that idea.

The one you’ve been looking at so much.

A different one. These were both scanned as black and white.

Well there are a *lot* of ways but zooming and coloring manually will probably be the easiest for you until you learn other techniques – Google "comics and photoshop" and you’ll find a wealth of resources out there.

I feel the need to point out to you that unless you want your furry to be doing an impression of Joe Thiesman –
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&rls=GGLD ,GGLD:2005-08,GGLD:en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&amp ;ct=result&cd=1&q=joe+theisman&spell=1,
– you should straighten out his left leg – even a furry has kinematics and his leg would never bend like that. If you were looking ot croass one leg over the other, it should bend at the knee and that alos means the thighe would be at a slight angle as well.

Cheers and best of luck!
