I hope I’m using the correct term. I’d like to turn a photograph of a person into a ‘sketch’ or line drawing. Then, I’d like to turn this into a characterture. What I need help with is the line drawing. How do I do this? Thank you………

One of ways to do it something like this:

1) Convert your image into grayscale (Image->Mode->Grayscale)
2) Copy background layer into new layer — "Background copy"
3) Invert your "Background copy" layer (Image->Adjustments->Invert)
4) Chane blending mode of "Background copy" layer to Color Dodge
5) Go to Filter menu and select Blur->Guassian Blur
6) Slide the Radius control in Gusssian Blur menu till you get enough details in the sketch

Have fun.

Are you using PhotoShop? If so, then the easiest way is to open the image in PhotoShop. Then go to "Image"…."Mode"….and click on "Grayscale". Now, go to "Filter"….."Sketch"…..and click on "Find
Edges".
To obtain fewer edges, just go to
"Image"….."Adjustments"….."Brightness/Contrast" and adjust the Brightness slider to reduce the amount of lines in the image. You can also adjust the contrast to suit your needs.
I’m not sure if this is what effect you were trying to achieve, but it does give you a B/W line type of image.

I’d use "Smart" blur instead of Guassian, set to high quality and edge only mode. The lower the threshold the more lines you will get. If your image appears as a black background with white lines on it, you will need to invert it after the effect. (as above) You will need to experiment with radius and threshold values as the effect you want will differ between images.
