I have a circular picture on a canvas so the four corners shows the canvas and any color I make the canvas. But, how can I make the canvas transparent so the image can be placed on any color background without having any canvas visible? Thanks. ken

One way would be to make your circular selection around your image, then Select>Inverse and then delete.
The layer will need to be above a background layer of choice for the effect to be seen, otherwise just a chequerboard.
Try this.
Open image and duplicate the layer (ctrl+J}
Colour the background layer to suit.
Make a circular selection around your image layer.
Then add a layer mask to this layer. (square icon with a circle inside on the layers palette)
If you apply some feathering to the selection, your circular selection will "fade" into the background colour.
