Hi All… hoping someone can help me out on this one….

I scan documents into CS2, saving it in photoshop first as a tiff. so I can later edit in InDesign as needed. I use a HP 4890 scanner (flatbed). Some documents are color, so I use the color setting, others are in black ink, so I use the Black and white setting. I scan at the 300 dpi the machine recommends ( i get a message saying the document may not look as good as what the machine picks for dpi if I pick a different dpi). Ok… so I have a black ink form that needs a couple of lines of type changed, so to do this, I scan it in as black and white….save in photoshop as a tiff so that when i import it into indesign, I can actually do editing…. What happens after the changes is this… the whole form prints out fine, but…. the type has thickened up considerably almost to the point of being unreadable (small type on form) and also being rejected by client.
My question is this: Is there a way to import and do the editing so that the type stays the same thickness as the original when printing? Maybe save as
something other than a tiff to start with? (a psd doesn’t allow you to make changes in In
Design)

I appreciate any eye deers….. As you can tell, I am new to CS2 and just learning… in fact I am still learning indesign after a year (don’t really use it much, but its very handy when i need it).

You should be using OCR software to alter scanned documents. Scanned documents are bitmaps, (as are all scanned images) the OCR software will convert this to an editable form that is changed in a word processor. You are treating the document as a graphic, what does it look like in print preview? Do the fonts have an outline or stroke and a fill? If so try removing the outline.

Ok….. would a place like staples have the OCR software? or could I conceiveably download it from the net? It’s hard for me to determine if the fonts have an outline or a stroke and fill. I guess I am not sure which is which, but it looks like a normal font, so I guess no outline? It just get thicker once printed out after I edit.
Should I be treating the document as a non graphic? I really need to play with it a little more to see what works best….

Thanks again for your help TWK!!

You normally get a "lite" version of OCR software when you buy a scanner, look through your discs.
I used to have the same problem with CorelDraw and fonts, vector and therefore scalable. The font consisted of an outline, usually 1 pixel and a coloured fill.and when using small fonts at low resolutions the font seemed to get fatter. It was even worse with thicker outlines.
A "Google" found this http://www.simpleocr.com/ don’t know anything about it but it is supposed to be free, have a read. TWK

An additional avenue is to scan in gray scale at a higher DPI and see if it looks better. Although I am speaking from a formal ignorance of what really happens, it seems to me that it may be that the edges of the letters may be over pixel boundaries and thus ‘blackening’ additional pixels. By scanning in gray scale at higher resolution, there will be fewer, smaller pixels encroached on beyond the edge and the edge pixels will be rendered in gray rather than black. Post-processing may then be able to clean this up.

Would like to know how this works out.

Yes.. I did get a disc with the scanner…I thought I loaded everything up , but will check on that…it sounds like saving as a tiff file is acceptable….I will also search the net for ocr software as well as check out the simple ocr….

Fwed ,
If you have any OCR software it usually ships on its own disk or part of any graphics software that came with the scanner.
The last time I had to scan a document (a bill) it was for a dude who was going through a divorce, I did it through PS, scanned as a JPG (lot of white space that can be compressed well) added the text on it own layer and it worked fine. The hardest part was matching the font and the level of ink with the rest of the bill.

The free OCR that Toobi mentions sounds pretty good. I checked out the two biggest OCR products, OmniPage 15 and ABBYY, just to see what they cost now. Too much if you ask me. I have older versions of those products, and they’re more trouble than they’re worth. When I would scan a document, it would highlight all the words that it wasn’t sure of, and I had to okay each one. It was roughly half of the text in the entire document. It took longer to make the corrections than it did to just type the whole thing from scratch.
If you can get some free OCR software, I’d go for that. If it doesn’t work too well, at least you didn’t pay for it.<g>

My intentions were to try and find something I could try and work with today, but last night, my mouse at home stopped working… .in short, all my usb ports aren’t being recognized, so needless to say this probllem is taking preference. I already uninstalled the all the usb devices and once I restarted the computer, it loaded them back up automatically… no errors, but still no recognition…. I have someone that I will be seeing to get this resolved for me on Sunday… in the meantime, I am using the old wired mouse (doesn’t use usb ports).
I can check around for the free OCR software…. I guess I would have to figure out how to use it too…. lol.anyway.. I really appreciate the help on this matter…. without you guys many of us would be lost… your help is priceless to those of us without the know how…..
There are a few groups I belong to that are very helpful…this is definitely one of them…. most of the people on the other ones are just there to blast you for your lack of knowledge….they tell you to go read the manual or do research first…. then come back… and I can agree to a point… just sometimes its easier to be told how or shown how to instead of spending an hour deciphering things…
Ok…. enuff said….i will let you all know how i made out.. prob be next week as I already used the old document without the changes for the client….that was his preference at this point…it was just an inside use form, so… the small changes weren’t that important to him…

Is it your USB ports or just your mouse? Have you tried another USB device? Have you installed anything new in the interim, apps or updates? Are you clear of viruses and other nasties?

I know it is the usb porst because they do not appear in the "my computer" portion. Once I brought home a wired mouse…I immediately ran a norton scan.. no issues at all… I then deleted all the usb ports from the system, then rebooted the computer…. it found new hardware, installed them once again, and still no recognition. I did this twice actually to make sure….. I even went inot the bios to make sure the usb ports were enabled…..anyway…. a buddy of mine fixes computers for a living… so I will be seeing him on sunday.
Heres what led up to that fatal day.. hehehe…we bought the kids new ipod shuffles (2)… so I was using the usb ports to charge them up..both at the same time… I have a feeling that there is a power supply issue with the ports, as in they aren’t getting any power because the system loads and installs the drivers… they appear to be on the system, etc etc… I read that on microsofts website that if you are using too many usb ports at one time, you may be overloading or drawing too much current and so thats why i think i may have damaged the power supply somehow…but it seems awfully funny how the rest of the system is operating fine….hmm.. wait.. come to think of it.. the printer uses a usb port… haven’t tried that yet….I will try printing something when i get back from work… So for now I am using a wired mouse, and my wife will have to use a cd instead of her memory stick…. least til sunday…..
I should have some time early next week to investigate the other issue with the editing i am having….it would be really nice if i could get this thing to work for me as i get alot of forms that have changes and the customers don’t have an electronic file….

Stay tuned!!

There are a few groups I belong to that are very helpful…this is definitely one of them…. most of the people on the other ones are just there to blast you for your lack of knowledge….they tell you to go read the manual or do research first…. then come back… and I can agree to a point… just sometimes its easier to be told how or shown how to instead of spending an hour deciphering things… Ok…. enuff said….i will let you all know how i made out.. prob be next week as I already used the old document without the changes for the client….that was his preference at this point…it was just an inside use form, so… the small changes weren’t that important to him…

Is it your USB ports or just your mouse? Have you tried another USB device?
Have you installed anything new in the interim, apps or updates? Are you clear of viruses and other nasties?
Have you tried a "system restore"?
TWK

I know it is the usb porst because they do not appear in the "my computer" portion. Once I brought home a wired mouse…I immediately ran a norton scan.. no issues at all… I then deleted all the usb ports from the system, then rebooted the computer…. it found new hardware, installed them once again, and still no recognition. I did this twice actually to make sure….. I even went inot the bios to make sure the usb ports were enabled…..anyway…. a buddy of mine fixes computers for a living… so I will be seeing him on sunday.
Heres what led up to that fatal day.. hehehe…we bought the kids new ipod shuffles (2)… so I was using the usb ports to charge them up..both at the same time… I have a feeling that there is a power supply issue with the ports, as in they aren’t getting any power because the system loads and installs the drivers… they appear to be on the system, etc etc… I read that on microsofts website that if you are using too many usb ports at one time, you may be overloading or drawing too much current and so thats why i think i may have damaged the power supply somehow…but it seems awfully funny how the rest of the system is operating fine….hmm.. wait.. come to think of it.. the printer uses a usb port… haven’t tried that yet….I will try printing something when i get back from work…
So for now I am using a wired mouse, and my wife will have to use a cd instead of her memory stick…. least til sunday…..
I should have some time early next week to investigate the other issue with the editing i am having….it would be really nice if i could get this thing to work for me as i get alot of forms that have changes and the customers don’t have an electronic file….

Stay tuned!!
Fwed,

My number one son (Threebi Won) blew a USB port on his PC whilst updating his mobile ‘phone, believe me, you would know it they had blown! It’s amazing how much energy 5v will deliver when you short the connection out. It didn’t stop the other port working though.
If you have lost the USB controller on the M/B you could always get a USB card to replace the onboards.
How many USB’s do you have ( back and front?) If you are having probs with the front connections, try the back ones.
Not a fan of Norton, its modus operandi seems to be that it makes the host computer so slow and unresponsive, that any self repecting virus takes pity on it for having enough problems already and leave it alone. I know there are a lot of people who are happy with Norton (same as being happy with AoL IMHO) and good luck to them, I’m just talking from personal experience.

I used to have the same problem with CorelDraw and fonts, vector and therefore scalable. The font consisted of an outline, usually 1 pixel and
a coloured fill.and when using small fonts at low resolutions the font
seemed to get fatter. It was even worse with thicker outlines. A "Google" found this http://www.simpleocr.com/ don’t know anything about it but it is supposed to be free, have a read.

Yes.. I did get a disc with the scanner…I thought I loaded everything

out the simple ocr….

The shuffles were on the computer charging about 3 hours one night and about as long the next day. after that, I reloaded itunes on the system and was downloading music…After I finshed, i walked away only to come back a few hours later to find no mouse….at first i thought it was the batteries, but they worked in a remote tv control……that happens sometimes so i rebooted with the same problem….after a little research, figured out i had no recognition of any of my usb drives on my computer….then i uninstalled them, rebooted.. it found hardware and reinstalled… same issue still…. I have 4 in the back and 2 in the front… i charged from the front ones…and downloaded from the back ones…it doesn’t even recognize the printer either… it has to be a power supply issue as they all aren’t being recognized….(well thats what I am thinking anyway)… i will know for sure on sunday when i go bring it to my buddies house…
On another note… I had some time to try out some new software..not sure if it was OCR or not, but it was over 200 megs…. I downloaded it from the hp website… its called photosmart premier….its made for the series 4800 scanner ( i have a 4890).. had same issues, so will try to find some specific OCR software on the net and install that and try… On even another note… I had Macafee, which i just hated… it seemed like it was controlling hafl my software all the time….and my buddy recommended norton to me, so thats how i ended up with it…. I am also not a fan of aol either…. they also seem to be a prasitic software….

Have a great weekend….
