I too am new to Bridge but not Photoshop. I bought a new Nikon D200 and set it to produce RAW files with the .nef file extension.

Bridge and Photoshop CS2 give me an unsupported file type error when I attempt to open them on the WIN version. A friend opens them easily with the same version on a Mac.

Help!

Thanks in advance for ANY forthcoming advice… other than suicide.

Have you updated you version of the RAW plugin? Help>Updates… Support for the D200 was added last year.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have a new copy of CS2 and never thought that the D200 wouldn’t be included. I downloaded the converter and voila!

What a pain in the ass. Now I have another step before I can work on the images.

Sheesh!

This is not a pain. It is the reason you are shooting raw files. This other step allows you to do some very low-level adjustments to the file before the contraction of values inherent in converting to JPG.

If you don’t want to do this, shoot in JPG.

A friend with a Mac brings the RAW files directly into Bridge, but my PC version of CS2 forces me to add a step. That’s the pain. I would never shoot in .jpeg

CS2 and Bridge are identical on both platforms. What is the extra step you are talking about? You view/sort photos in Bridge, doulble-click to go to the RAW converter then transfer to PS. You can open them directly from PS via the converter and eliminate the Bridge step if you like (no preview though).

Neither Bridge nor CS2 will read the RAW files until I convert them using the Adobe DNG converter. Maybe it’s my versions, but if I dload the files into the Mac at the studio no conversion is necessary.
