FYI for anyone who might be looking for a new (not refurbished) 21" CRT… NEC has just released some reserve stock of their FE2111SB monitors. Not a bad price (at least compared to the $1100 I paid for an almost equivalent Mitsubishi Diamondtron 7+ years ago, which BTW is *still* running great), and they come with full 3-year warranties from NEC. I bought one for a backup, if/when this 2040u finally dies.

NM-Select’s website will claim the monitors are backordered after you confirm your order, but according to Trav Russell they’re now en route from NEC’s warehouse in Calif to NM-Select and will be in stock and shipped either today (Friday) or early next week:

Tom,

I’ve got a 2070SB that I love, but after four years it’s starting to get dim and can barely becalibrated. What’s the difference between it and this Fe2111? I paid ~$800 for my 2070 and this is only a couple of hundred less so I’m wondering what’s missing. If it’s the same tube and electronics, I’m definitely in.

Thanks.

Craig, the FE2111SB uses the same Diamondtron tube as the 2040/60/70, but its supporting components are not quite as good,
e.g. max refresh rates are not as high as the 2040/60/70 (although
they’re more than adequate for most purposes), it has one input port instead of two, and it’s missing a bunch of menu gingerbread that few people used anyway on the Mitsubishis.

At $360 brand new, with a 3-year warranty it’s still a hell of a deal IMO. You won’t find any LCD with the same color gamut for under $1400, and by the time the monitor’s warranty expires LED monitors should be out in force at reasonable prices.
