I am looking to do an effect that is illustrated in the top graphic of this site’s homepage.

<http://rlchome.org/>

Since I’m new to photoshop I don’t know if this kind of graphic can be created in layers or whether there is a plugin or effect that can creat it without all the other work. Can someone guide me please.

Hey Matt: How’d you do that? Find someone had posted a link to your site here on the forums, that is?? Was it just detective work on the "referers" in your web logs???

Anyhows: Great of you to offer to help James. Why not "walk him through it here in this thread? the whole point of the forums is that other "newbies" will pick up on the information too.

Oh yes! – Welcome to the forums. Keep looking in now you’ve found us 😉

Yes, I found alot of hits from this forum and decided to see where they were coming from.

I made the effect using the "alien skin eye candy 5: impact" filters. There is a filter in that package called "glass" that makes that cool effect. I actually made that particular one in Fireworks. The filter plugins work in both photoshop or fireworks.

I made picture size the size i wanted the header, and started adding the components to it (logo, the maroon curve, the white background with fading white. I made a new transparent layer and applied the glass filter to it. I then made a large white shape and "punched out" the curved cornered rectangle (this is done in fireworks, i am sure you can do it in photoshop.) I centered this layer over the top to cut off the corners of my square header. I saved it all as a layered png.

I used flash to make the slideshow appear under the picture. The slide show component I picked up free here <http://www.whatdoiknow.org/archives/001629.shtml>. I opened this component in flash and imported my layered png as a movie on top of the slideshow. If you look in the comments where you download the slideshow, it will tell you how to do this. The slideshow content is controlled by an xml file.

a long and complicated explanation for something that was not as hard as it sounds. The short answer is …. Alien skin.

Alien Skin NOT needed for stuff like that. Photoshop’s Layer Styles will do it just fine.

I never claimed it was needed, but that is how I did it.

I think if you have a better way, you need to explain it in enough detail so Jim can replicate it.

"I think if you have a better way, you need to explain it in enough detail so Jim can replicate it."

I wouldn’t explain it, because there are too many variables to consider. It would just be giving a recipe to someone who only knows how to turn on the stove.

A more efficient plan would be to suggest that some creative, focused Googling for sites with bazillions of free Layer Styles available for download. That would ultimately be a smarter way to go, IMO.

Once some Layer Styles are found that get close, James could apply them, and then go about experimenting with tweaking the settings, to see what they do.

Teach a man to fish, don’t you know.

Matt…

What you have to realize is that these forums really aren’t about teaching the basics of Photoshop. Sure, that sort of stuff isn’t precluded here, it’s just not the focus, really. This forum is more about getting help when things don’t work, or for exploring a lot of the finer, esoteric aspects of Photoshop. I don’t mean that to sound elitist; it’s just the way it is. I’m not responsible for it, it’s just the way this place has developed.

There are thousands of sites that are built specifically for that purpose, with ready-made tutorials with plenty of helpful images, and downloads of all kinds. All just waiting to be discovered on the other end of Google.

And there are the quick-n-handy Help Files and the PDF manual. Almost always, they’re going to be quicker for finding answers to a lot of the basic questions than posting here and waiting for an answer.

As I see it, this is a user to user forum, meaning it is whatever we choose to make it. If someone asks a basic question, some may choose not to answer it but others will be more than happy to.

Exactly, Glen.

I’m just pointing out that this isn’t the best place to find step-by-step instruction on basic techniques. Again: I didn’t decree that; it’s just the way this place has evolved through the voluntary participation of all the people here.

There are definitely many other great sites which are all about providing the recipes.

For learning PS I went to www.good-tutorials.com, they have tutorials ranging from beginners to advanced. I also post here in the forums and have found many helpful people who showed patience in helping me out even with something they would consider basic. For downloading layer styles etc, get them here at the Adobe exchange. After a quick check, I found 1,209 layer styles available at the exchange.
