I apologize for the elementary question, but I just now moved the cursor to the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers palette, and it wants to activate a vector mask, not a layer mask. Specifically, I created a Hue and Saturation Adjustment Layer, adjusted one of the colors, OK’ed the change, and tried to mouse on the Layer Mask icon so that I could restrict the color change to one part of the image. No dice; "Add Vector Mask" was all I could get. I don’t know what, if anything, I’m doing wrong.

thanks in advance,

Bcourt

The adjustment layer should already have a layer mask.

If there’s already a Layer Mask, the icon will make a Vector Mask. As CN said, there’s a Layer Mask on the AL already.

If I make a duplicate layer and then make an Inage > Adjustment > H&S, I can get a layer mask by placing cursor on the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. If I make a H&S Adjustment Layer, I can get only a vector mask by clicking on the same icon.

As I have said, this is something new; I have always been able to make an Adjustment Layer, OK the edit, and then activate Layer Mask directly.

As far as your suggestion goes, I made a H&S Adjustment Layer, and simply used the Brush tool as if the Layer mask were already in place, but no luck. I’m still confused by this new development.

Thanks,

I’m not sure what you ‘re saying. When you make an Adjustment Layer it comes with a Layer Mask attached. If you click the Mask icon it will add a Vector Mask. It’s always been that way, as far as I know.

When you go to Image>Adjustment you are not making an Adjustment Layer. You are adjusting that layer.

Ed, I understand the difference between an Adjustment Layer and an adjustment executed on a duplicate layer via Image > Adjustment. What I guess I don’t understand is, if a Layer Mask is always attached to an Adjustment Layer, how do you activate the mask to hide the part of the adjustment that you do not want?

Thanks.

You should be able to paint right on it with black. You don’t need to activate it; just paint as if in the image area.

I think you click on the mask outline in the layers palette before you paint.

Edit: No you don’t; provided the layer is selected. Was that an earlier version or am I dreaming it?

You’re right, Ed. Thanks again for bearing with me.

Just paint with black in the layer mask that comes with the Adjustment Layer. That will hide the changes made by the adjustment layer.
