I own Photoshop 6.0 and 7.0 and recently, whenever I go to Layer>Later Style>any of the layer styles, it takes about 5 minutes to display the layer information where you can edit the layer style(bevel and emboss, stroke, etc.) I have uninstalled and re-installed both programs several times yet nothing seems to change. This is an extreme annoyance and I can’t even start making graphics for my web page because it takes 5-10 minutes to simply put a drop-shadow on the text. I noticed in the Photoshop readme file, it says to hide all the layer effects and it should load normally but this is not the case. I hope someone can help me….PLEASE!

Let me guess: you’re using Windows 98?

It’s a known problem in Windows 98 resource management.

The solution is to upgrade to NT, 2K, or XP.

Chris,

I have to disagree with you on ME being SE. The memory management in ME was a step backwards from 98-SE. I know several people who bought computers with ME installed and didn’t get them running smoothly until they upgraded to 98-SE.

Bill, running XP home now

Hi Mista,
I have Windows 98SE on my desktop and I just recently upgraded my laptop to XP.

I have not had that problem at all. I have never done a Windows 98SE update from the MSFT website. I was afraid something else would get messed up on my computers.

I do have a lot of memory though. Could it be that you need more memory. I also have everything off my startup menu so that I have 93% of my resources free when I start working in photoshop.

I usually have other programs including e-mail closed. I do check it though when I am working in Photoshop.

PS needs XP all that 98 crap is too outdated.

If you upgrade to XP make sure that you download an utility from Microsoft to see if your system can handle it.

PSCS needs XP, but I wouldn’t agree with the rest of it. I’ve been running Photoshop on Win98SE since version 5.5. It’s not for the faint of heart, in as much as you have to be diligent about system management, but I run flawlessly. <shrug>

That utility, IMHO, is worthless. It’s going to find anything that WinXP doesn’t have native drivers for.

And Photoshop CS does not require XP; Win2K SP3 is fine.

One last point. Never upgrade an operating system. A clean install is a must.

Well Tony I was running on win 95 I guess with PS4, then PS5 and 5.5 with 98SE and even 6. Had no real problems.

Thanks Bob for this info. I did not know this about the utility.
