A couple of websites to look at. Vertus has "Fluid Mask" a plug-in for Photoshop that takes some getting use to but works well. The other is an Adobe company, "Serious Magic" that has a software program "Ultra 2" that is used for outlining/keying of digital video. Not sure if you can import a psd file and separate from the background.
Would be great if the technology in Ultra2 was incorporated in Photoshop CS3.
