Was wondering if anyone could help me out in this area? Not sure if I’ve overlooked the obvious, but I can’t seem to find out how to create a table in photoshop cs2. Maybe it’s not possible, but I thought I’d ask.

My main goal is to create a doc in photoshop that I originally created in word, using a table as frame for my text. At the very least, if I can’t create a table, is the main way to create lines through Paths? I haven’t gotten to that section yet, but it appears as the only way I’ve found yet.

I know this is really basic, but I don’t know how else to get help! Thanks!

PS isn’t really made for layout work.

You would probably be better off doing this in Illustrator or InDesign.

Thanks for your quick response. I don’t have access to either of those two programs though. I’ll probably have to make do with paths?

What is the purpose of the table? What effect are you after that made you think of doing it in Photoshop and not something like Word or Excel?

Jennifer,

As everyone has pointed out, PS isn’t the tool for table work… although replying to John’s query about what you’re trying to do would help people give you pointers.

And although you don’t have InDesign or Illustrator, both are available for free 30 day evals.

Ultimately, I’m creating a photoshop doc. that will be saved as a JPEG and uploaded to my flash photo website. The doc. will be all text. I originally created the doc. in word, but can’t copy the word doc into photoshop without losing 3/4 of the page. So, I was going to retry typing it into photoshop. A lot of the text is organized into a table for easy reading. I would like to keep the same format, but I may end up just adding text without lines. Any ideas?

Jennifer – how can you have Photoshop without Image ready! they are sold together?
And as Tacit is want to point out, if you are fixing something with screws, use a screwdriver, not a hammer!

Should have said – Image ready has a table insertion facility, maybe you could edit in Image ready! then return to Photoshop??

I think I have the wrong idea with Image ready!!
I think the table tool I am referring to relates to image slicing! sorry

Took a class on it and so I’m familiar with it. Don’t feel all that competent in it, but I had considered it as a last resort.

You can save from word as an HTML web page!

In agreement with all the above posters about using something other than PS, but if you’re stuck with PS, there are some free PS plugins that can generate a grid in varying configurations across your PS canvas. Once you have your grid which simulates a table, you can paste your text into the appropriate grid column/row. Not elegant, but it’ll look somewhat like a table with borders around the cells.

Thanks, Dennis. That might just work for me! I don’t need anything too complicated, just some organizational lines. Thanks for the tip!

If you’re going to use text on the site, ENTER it as text (in the HTML), not an image of text. Just my opinion and one of my peeves about some websites.

I just want to mention that Adobe Illustrator does not do much better at making tables than Photoshop. (Unless this was a feature of CS2 I hadn’t heard of). InDesign is the program for this type of work.

AI, on the other hand, creates charts and graphs well, if not as well as some newer programs (I don’t think graphing has been updated since it came out around version 3 or 4.)

Take a look a ImageReady. It comes with Photoshop and you can create slices and html with it.

Jennifer,

I would rather make the table in Excel instead of Word.
Select the table then hold Shift before going go Edit > Copy Image (or something similar – I have a Dutch Excel)

Jennifer,

Make the table in Excel or Word, save it as a .pdf and bring it into Photoshop as a layer on top of your background.

Yes, Adobe Acrobat is available as a 30-day eval too. ;- )

InDesign makes tables better than Illustrator, but Illlustrator would be much easier than Photoshop. One would just use the blend tool with step option.

I originally created the doc. in word, but can’t copy the word doc into Photoshop without losing 3/4 of the page.

Jennifer,

Increase your screen resolution so the Word version of the graphic will all fit onto your screen (Desktop->RightClick->Properties->Settings->Screen Resolution) then do a screen capture (press the ‘Print Screen " button on the top left of your keyboard), open Photoshop, select New->File->OK and the paste the screen capture (Ctrl+V)and there’s your word file as a bitmap image. Crop and re-sample it to what you need and voila, job done 🙂

Oh, don’t forget to return the screen resolution to the setting you prefer.
